People that drink coffee for the caffeine, why don't you just take caffeine pills? - Lemmy.World

Cause sooooooodaaaaaa
Drinking gives higher comfort levels than pill popping.
You can put a lot of things in coffee…I can’t exactly mix whiskey with caffeine pills…

The same reason smokers don’t just wear nicotine patches.

There’s much more to the ritual. The caffeine may be part of it, but pulling in the other senses: the flavor, the smell, the warm mug in your hands, all add up to much more than a dose of caffeine.

I thought about that but two things. 1) nicotine patches don’t give you the same amount afaik. 2) There are more addicting things in cigarettes, people that switch to vaping (same nicotine) say it doesn’t hit as much.

Most people that say “I just drink coffee for the caffeine” likely think that, but actually do like the coffee experience.

People who just want caffeine do indeed take caffeine pills

I do not know I like caffeine. But I like to drink coffee.

Do people know she or he likes caffeine or coffee?

Id bet for most that its a package deal. The coffee ritual is a fine thing on its own, but people generally start drinking coffee for “energy.”

After a while, you like the coffee and the energy.

I’d counter your point about vaping “not hitting as much.” I vape (unfortunately) and used to smoke and yeah, at first you don’t get the throat hit you’d get with cigarettes but now that I vape? I’m positive I get much more nicotine overall because it’s so convenient to sit around all day vaping indoors.
This. Vaping is both a blessing and curse when it comes to making the switch from reg cigs.
it’s like drinking alcohol - you go to a bar/pub for the social scene, but you pregame in the parking lot with a bottle of cheap vodka to get fucking wrecked first.
nicotine patches and lozenges are actually similarly great. Just low level nicotine for hours. If I don’t have enough water or am too tired to start with then they will cause low-grade nausea though.

“People who X, why not Y?”

Y person: “Well akshully,”

Weirdly, taking caffeine pills makes me super sleepy. I have ADHD so stimulants affect me differently from most people, but coffee doesn’t make me drowsy at all. The only thing I can think of is that with a pill, the full dose is absorbed all at once, while with a drink, it’s spread out over the time it takes to drink it.

Pills don’t warm me up.

Pills aren’t as easily divisible/measurable.

Pills don’t have a good taste like creamer.

The pills that I have make me too jittery (this might just be a reflection on the 2nd point).

This is like asking: People who eat food for the calories, why don’t you just eat dry primate food pellets?

Because there’s a big upside to enjoying the experience of drinking coffee with few downsides. If coffee was just caffeine dissolved in water it’d be a very different story

Personally I only care about calories, I’m on board for food pellets if they actually worked and were healthy.
This is the comment that made me realize youre not having a good faith discussion here

You may be a robot in that regard but you’re clearly aware that people enjoy the taste of food and coffee, right?
That’s why I said for the caffeine and not who enjoy coffee.
So you’re really asking about people who dislike coffee but drink it regularly anyway for caffeine? Are there a lot of people in this situation?
If energy drinks and tea weren’t a thing then yeah… but they are so I’m guessing not really. Then again if coffee were the only caffeine option I probably wouldn’t have a caffeine addiction…
I’ve definitely met people like that when I was in college. It was pretty uncommon though
Me, unfortunately. Never picked up the taste for coffee, but I accidentally got hooked on caffeine through energy drinks, which are way worse for you. Now I’m trying to acquire the taste for coffee at a late stage to wean myself off energy drinks.
I say this as a coffee drinker: try tea. There’s way more flavor options to help you ease into it. Start with some fruity flavors and work your way toward the more bitter stuff (if you ever want to get there)
Seconding the idea of tea. My schedule doesn’t allow the amount of bathroom breaks I would need if I consumed enough tea to get the caffeine I need, but I would prefer tea over anything else given the chance.
Drinking tea actually expanded my palate enough to learn how to enjoy black coffee. It wasn’t until I started brewing my own including cleaning the machine myself that it started coming out good enough to really look forward to.

I’ve tried and failed to enjoy black coffee so many times until I realized it’s the mouth feel. I don’t prefer it with sugar but I need milk or creamer for it to be palatable!

Somewhat ironically I can’t stand milk in tea.

Bad coffee can be really bad when it comes to texture. Grounds have ruined more than one cup of coffee since I’ve been drinking it regularly. Valid complaint.
I’m a big fan of my Aeropress
I can only put milk in English or Indian teas.

I can’t do it at all lol

The thing I like least about coffee is the bitterness but it’s the thing I love most about tea

I learned to drink coffee with chocolate milk mixed in, then after a week black coffee was palatable. Parents drank excessive levels so it was always available, no one had milk or sugar in it so… I guess I learned it fast out of convenience :-)
You don’t have to dislike, you can be neutral about it, not care about it, you just drink it for the caffeine.
Milk and sugar makes it bearable.

I drink coffee mainly for the caffeine but I’d prefer to consume said caffeine via the most delicious method. Why NOT drink coffee if I also like the taste?

Your question is actually “people who drink coffee for caffeine even though they hate the taste, why not use caffeine pills?” which targets an extremely slim demographic

Well, the Jetsons cartoon takes place in 2062, so…
Same. I’d eat dog food if it hit my macros and tasted alright.
Bachelor Chow! now with flavor!!!

I do both! Tea as well.

Coffee I like when I’m sitting at a desk doing busywork for a long time. Tea I like for many reasons, it has more vitamins and minerals than coffee, more flavor diversity, and anti inflammatory properties.

Caffeine pills I take in the morning if I just want to get moving quickly, and I also use them as a pre-workout instead of those expensive powders.

I could just use (and have just used) pills instead of coffee, and it works just fine. However, they literally just hit different. The pills are all at once and then it wears off slowly, coffee lets you ramp up at any speed and maintain at any level. It’s mostly just preference, but being able to spread out the same amount of caffeine is very handy. I would be interested in slow-release caffeine pills, although I imagine these would be very dangerous for some people.

Why would I go out of my way to purchase and swallow pills when I can just hit a button at work and have it spit out an espresso?
There’s other healthy components in coffee that wouldn’t be present in a caffeine pill. Plus, I like the taste.

I used to take caffeine pills but they’d leave me incredibly dehydrated and jittery. I still get jittery with the daily coffee habit but I cut myself off at noon and drink tons of water all day.

They’re totally different.

Cause I like the smell, the taste, the warmth. Maybe if I had no time I would take caffeine pills, but the experience of a cup of coffee is nice.
I’m convinced that the “ugh, decaf, what’s the point?” crowd don’t actually like coffee and should just take caffeine pills, lol.

“People who drink to get drunk, why don’t you just drink Everclear?”

Some people like coffee. It tastes like mud, feels like wet sediment in your mouth, but some people like it.

Other people make a scene about it. Same with energy drinks. You won’t get a health lecture if someone sees you drink a cup of coffee. Pop a pill? Prepare for unsolicited medical advice.

Also, they don’t sell them at the grocery store or pharmacy I frequent.

tldr: it’s too much of a hassle

lol that’s an interesting aspect.

I do pills. Personally, it’s because a pill releases it all at once and coffee is a dose over time, making the effect less.

Also, my pills are tempered with L-Theanine to blunt the jitters.

coffee smells amazing. if I make it myself, I can do it cheaply & add whatever I want to it (freshly ground cinnamon is very nice).

if I want pills I can get them. I dont want them.

I do drink coffee for the caffeine. But its also yummy and soothing on cold days. Win win.
I don’t just drink it for the caffeine but that’s a big reason. I also like that it does hydrate you in the short term and also that combo helps suppress appetite. I only drink coffee in the morning and don’t usually want to eat until lunch. This gives me everything I want in the beginning of the day.
It’s tasty and something to look forward to in the morning. It’s also a pretty cheap luxury if you make it yourself.
Such a weird question. If you eat to get sustenance, why eat tasty food carefully prepared and not fill it with ingredients blended into mush?
oh, you mean a smoothie. people do that too
Not with meat and bread.
