Performance 1 on our New York #ArtVacation: A recreation of Lucinda Childs’ 1979 collaboration with Philip Glass, “Dance”. Incredible! Hypnotic music, simple repetitive movement, overlaid by film of the same dancers making the same movements.

Apparently a seismic shift when it debuted, it holds up remarkably well. Made me think of animation and gave me all sorts of ideas for my own work. This made the whole trip worthwhile.

Performance 2: “Room with a View” by (LA)HORDE, musician Rone, and Ballet national de Marseille. Like being back at a slutty rave with a bunch of grabby hoes. Not as bad as it sounds, but not as fun either. 😐

They apparently added Rone to the stage recently, making music live. Made me think of the novel “Subutex,” or the Maenads. Uneven, with some nice moments. There just wasn’t a need for a rape scene.

Performance 3: “States of Hope” by Hope Boykin. I should know by now to avoid matinees since that’s nap time for me. An exploration of Boykin’s inner life through her long career. We all have insecurities and doubts, but giving them (a literal) voice for a two-hour show was a bit indulgent.

Performance 4: “KŌSA” by #SankaiJuku. Selections from their long career. Some stunning, others less so—the latter for me tends to be solo dance, no matter the genre, I get bored quick.

These two publicity shots are from pieces I liked. The first, a goth-y vibe, the second, a fluid dance that made me think of fire and water at different points.

Less facial expressions and quicker movements than I expected. I’d see them again.

Performance 5: (LA)HORDE, Lucinda Childs, Lasseindra Ninja (yes, THAT bitch).

I am now a #LucindaChilds fan, happy I got to see two more of her pieces (images 1 and 2). (LA)HORDE was back on their slutty schtick again, but I liked them OK in these shorter pieces. “Tik Tok Jazz” (last image) seemed to draw inspiration from Childs, which tempered the humpy 20-year old energy. Respect to Ballet national de Marseille for their versatility.

An initiative in favor of dance and institutions to disseminate choreographic heritage and support creation.

Had to give Lasseindra Ninja her own post. Her piece was called “Mood” and it was everything. It was electrifying to see ballroom and voguing in this venue, among these other works. What a thrill for those totally unfamiliar with the scene.
