@drwho I've done this, multiple times, but it was telnet/ssh into a server and beep them in chat, just because nobody left a Mac network exposed around me.
erikreadonly@mdhughes in college (in the 90's) my roomate would way way oversleep and our way of getting him to wake up was to telnet into his (dialed-in) linux desktop and cat the kernel to /dev/audio. I feel seen.
be3n@mdhughes who can text to speah from command line but cannot set volume? i use:

Hamido@mdhughes My doorbell button uses an HTTP API, I have to trigger Home Assistant which then uses Z-Wave to play the door-bell tune in the door chime and MPD to play a bell sound audio file on various media players around the house.
This XKCD is painfully accurate, and I've sat on my doorstep faaaaaaar too many times while configuring it 🤣
