Multiple reports that Apple employees do not have confidence that their AI/ML teams will be able to build competitive AI products.

Given how bad Siri and autocorrect have been for years, I think these fears are justified.

I’ve joked that Apple should delete the Siri code and replace it with a ChatGPT wrapper. While in jest, there’s a kernel of truth there. If Microsoft can swallow its pride and partner with OpenAI, it’s foolhardy for Apple to go it alone.

Apple and AI

The anxiety inside Apple is that many people inside do not believe Apple’s own AI/ML team can deliver.

@carnage4life While I don’t disagree with those employees, Apple’s competitive advantage - privacy - is what would get me to use a subpar product if an on-device LLM is at least half as good as GPT4.

(Also I can’t believe I just typed that. We need data privacy laws so badly in this country. 🙄)

@carnage4life just like when MS bit the bullet with (original) Edge and just embraced Chromium. Sometimes you just have to stop pissing against the wind.

@connelhooley @carnage4life

As it stands, Apple is the only big tech company not mining my data hither, thither, and yon to feed the gaping maw of model training.

I don’t care if Apple is avoiding doing so for stupid reasons, I just care that they’re doing it. Whether their commitment to my privacy is real, or just a marketing distinction, or borne out of unwillingness to humble themselves to OpenAi or Google, I don’t care! I just want them to stick with it, and I can put up with inferior AI as a result.

@carnage4life
IMO, not having confidence in AI/ML is a point in their favor.

If only that were the case with Microsoft et.al.

@binder @carnage4life

I feel like people saying this haven’t given it a fair shake.

Maybe it’s because I’m in IT/tech and I write scripts often but it’s extremely useful and has helped me get to the correct answer far more than it’s been wrong.

@carnage4life 2 comments: it looks like some groups at Apple did not get the project wanted and are now trying to vent as “sources familiar with Apple inner workings” AND the most advanced ML tools come from gross violations of privacy so I am ok if Siri opens my garage when I try to set a timer for 10 minutes.
@carnage4life imo they’ve done a phenomenal job on the hardware & software front. i’d be suprised if they could also do a good job in AI. that’s a crazy big spread, hard to be good at all of it. might as well come to grips with the laws of org physics
@carnage4life I don’t believe the kind of partnership that a move like that would require is in their culture. More likely of doing it through acquisition.

@carnage4life @briankrebs
Nope!
Microsoft’s tacked/on invasive shoehorning of ChatGPT into Windows 11, office and Edge is user (and user-security) hostile and feels rushed and unplanned.

I think that Apples slow and steady approach is built on a much more stable foundation and will end with a much better product.

@carnage4life yeah and if they just wait a few years, they'll be able to charge OpenAI billions for the privilege too
