I remember working at my beach place a year ago, on a conference call. At the time, I still mostly used Twitter and had notifications enabled on my phone. During my meeting, the notifications stated going crazy. I opened my phone and saw dozens of people talking about joining infosec.exchange, recommending people join infosec.exchange and so on.

The server was all in one on an AX101 Hetzner server (amd 5950) that I thought would never need to be replaced. It did quite well, performing admirably for about another 3 weeks, at which point my life outside of work mostly pivoted to being a mastodon admin.

After those 3 weeks, it was a mad scramble and hard lessons in scaling out and scaling up on the cheap.

And here we are. Over 60000 people have joined, over 18000 remain active in the time since.

I am very glad to be part of the community and appreciate the patience you’ve all shown.

@jerry appreciate the great hosting and optimisation, thank you.
@jerry Your hard work is very much appreciated. Thank you for providing us a safe harbor in rough seas. I probably would have dithered over joining a server if infosec.exchange hadn't been the obvious choice.

@jerry

Thanks for going to all the trouble and expense that you do!

All that new hardware must be costing a few pennies πŸ€”

Imagine having to put up with Xhitter 24/7 for actual news and information πŸ˜£πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

If we didn't have I.E we would have to invent it πŸ™‚

@simonzerafa the new HW should cost about $1200/month. After the redis and Postgres move, I will have shut down 9 servers, likely costing about $1000/month. I’ll also save a bunch on backblaze charges
@jerry how big of a user base did infosec.exchange have prior to the twitter implosion?
@jerry The stability and speed you maintained, after being hit with wave after wave of folks looking for a new home, is nothing short of amazing. There are not many who could’ve handled it so well. I wish you many orchids, camera lenses and domains in your future! πŸ’œ [If your wife asks, I will deny ever having said this.]
@jerry Thank you so much for your work. This has been an incredibly useful, and comforting, place to be. Nothing but appreciation for all your time.
@jerry Thankyou for all of your hard work is keeping it running.
