As a leader, how important is it that people like you? I want to suggest that it is more important to be respected and trusted by your team, rather than just liked.

#leadership #respect #trust #lovableleadership

@JGibbard I would say trust is mandatory, respect is gained after trust, being liked often follows but is a bonus not mandatory
@mjbatty interesting. I have a slightly different view that respect should be the standard and the default. It's something people can lose but shouldn't have to earn. This is using a specific definition of respect. Trust, on the other hand, is something that must be built but is easy to lose.

@JGibbard hmm, interesting. I suppose we all have different perspectives. Agree that trust is earned, I ask people to take a 'leap of faith' to begin with that grows into trust.

Actually, here's a thought.

Could you trust a leader but not respect them, or could you respect a leader but not trust them?

I'm not sure, I will need that thought to ferment a bit 🤔

@mjbatty that's an interesting question.

My gut says that you could probably respect them but not yet trust them, but probably not respect and distrust.

However, I'm not sure there's any way to trust someone you don't also respect.

Definitely an interesting thought experiment.

@JGibbard yes, it is!

I might need to let this brew over a bottle of wine tonight, certainly interesting though 🤔
