Soooo... what is the danger here?

That someone else will build infrastructure that the Canadian government clearly has no intention of building;

That in doing so, they will believe they have more right in the region than the nation that is effectively the Fruit of the Poisonous Tree that is the Doctrine of Discovery.

Internal CSIS documents obtained by CBC News show that the agency is trying to grow its presence in the North and deepen its relationship with Inuit communities in response to "economic, strategic and military interests of foreign states in the North."

CSIS warning Inuit leaders about covert foreign investment in Arctic, documents show | CBC News

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has warned Inuit leaders that foreign adversaries could gain a foothold in Canada by offering to fill infrastructure gaps in the North.

@Gigi it's sadly hilarious that the obvious solution to this would be for Canada to build infrastructure there but of course that's not on the table. "Watch out! Other countries might be willing to give you a better deal than the Canadian Mining State! Be on your guard against people who might treat you better than us!"

@Geoffberner

RIGHT!?

And then try to schmooze their way in, to what? get them to work as proxy CSIS agents?

I'm trying to remember the last time I read a news article that involved CSIS that didn't make me shake my head in disbelief.

@Gigi @Geoffberner

Geee, abandon people but warn them against accepting someone else's investments in infrastructure. And this is what passes for intelligence?

@paezha @Gigi maybe if everyone up there signs up to be paid CSIS informants they can pool the money for a rec center or something.
@paezha @Gigi I find it sort of reassuring to know just how crap at spying these people are.
@paezha @Gigi let's also take a moment to enjoy the idea of secretive, spy-built...public infrastructure!
@paezha @Gigi "Wait a minute...who paid for this water treatment center? Why is everything written in Chinese characters? We've got to get to the bottom of this!"
@paezha @Gigi "This is a really nice clinic. But why are there all these nesting dolls everywhere? Wait a minute..."

@Geoffberner @paezha

LMAO!

That reminded me of this classic headline

Edited to add the photo because the preview cuts it off.

U.S. And U.K. Accuse Russia Of In-Orbit Test Of Nesting Doll Anti-Satellite Weapon

The test threatens an arms race in space in which every military satellite will be shadowed by one or more orbiting anti-satellite weapons, ready to destroy it in the event of a conflict. This may in turn lead to anti-anti-satellite weapons.

@Geoffberner @paezha

In the late 90s, at the height of the Great And Wonderful Tech Bubble, I attended a recruitment fair that had a CSIS booth.

MUCH was clarified within about 30 seconds of looking around. And clearly nothing has changed in the 25 years since.

@paezha @Gigi "If you find yourself approached by someone with a strange accent who offers to cover your costs for recovering from surgery or provides you with mental health support after you age out of foster care, report them immediately!"

@Geoffberner @paezha

We are overdue for an asteroid.

@Gigi @paezha we got the asteroid. Now we're supposed to "live with it"
@Gigi What a self-own this is

@lightlysaltd

It's certainly something.

Imagine going around telling people not to take things from people who are offering to not treat you quite as badly as the federal government.

Because they have an ulterior motive.

As does the Canadian government, except without the "treating you better" part.
