Drove the #Kusatsu- #ShigaKogen route, the highest national road in #Japan, today.

It was 2C at the peak at #Yokoteyama.

This road is closed for much of the year due to heavy snow.

It’s mostly beautiful, but really bleak at points, particularly near Mt #Shirane, a very active volcano.

@japanskier "Highest national road" as opposed to what? Are there private roads that are higher?

That was a serious question. I wonder what the national road actually means.

@TomatoGrilledCheese In Japan there are national, prefectural, city/town/village, and private roads. This one is a national road, and at 2170 meters at the Shibu Pass, it is the highest. I imagine there are other higher altitude roads of other types.
