It took me until 22 to figure out how to enjoy learning an instrument, following years of lessons that convinced me that this is not for me.

It took me until 25 to enjoy learning to speak a language after school convinced me I'd never like that.

It took me until 28 to enjoy painting after years of miserable art classes in school.

There's probably a valuable life lesson here but I'm actually just curious to see what I'll learn to enjoy next.

@sschoener I basically didn't play an instrument between leaving for college in 2005 and this year. Years of forced piano lessons will do that (and none of my instruments look anything like a piano 😆)
@pux0r3 that sounds very familiar :) I ended up picking a guitar (for Rocksmith), then a bass guitar, then a ukulele, and now I'm back to piano. I'm not really good at any of them, but they bring me joy. Lessons should really focus on that first and foremost.
@[email protected] Yeah, I'm at a pennywhistle, mountain dulcimer, and hurdy gurdy. I'm eyeing having a custom dulcimer commissioned, but am also curious about an octave mandolin/bouzouki...
But my goal now is to be aggressively mediocre. I just like making music sounds and the process of learning/memorizing tuned. It does help that I can read notation though, so I'm at least happy for that😆
@sschoener what else did you hate in school?
@elliotc interacting with most of my peers? :)
@sschoener i gather you fixed that one already :)
