Proposal streamlining – welcome changes!

Yesterday ARC opened #FutureFellowships apps & they’ve (finally) taken on board calls to significantly reduce length, complexity & duplication.

This similar to #LaureateFellowships, & hopefully #DECRA, but this 🧵 focusses on #FT24

👇

Main changes are in ROPE & Project Description.

The old 5-page ROPE is now 1 page for contributions to field, impact, leadership & mentoring, plus ~200 words for 10 “career highlights”.

Anyone rewriting an unsuccessful proposal will be annoyed, but a welcome change overall IMO.

In ROPE there’s also 200 words for “research outputs context” (down from 500) plus 300 to annotate “best 10” research outputs.

There’s no full publication list. I think that’s good – focusses assessors on most relevant outputs, with context, rather than a long list with none.

Project Description is now 7 pages, not 10.

The “Investigator/Capability” and “Feasibility & Strategic Alignment” stuff is gone – it was pretty uninformative for assessors &, for most people, largely duplicated other parts of app.

Another good change, IMO.

Elsewhere in the app there’s generally less rubbish.

For example, the old 1-page justification of academic level, signed by the DVCR, is gone.

Overall, the app is shorter & simpler. That comes with its own challenges, but I think this is a good direction to move in.
