I wish I could convey to you the psychological swoop of remembering that there is a whole section of the first Terminator movie where Kyle Reese is teaching Sarah Connor how to make pipe bombs and how differently that will land once you've read this.

(from https://mastodon.social/@stavvers@masto.ai/111181614978897879 )

I'm going to tell my kids that the terminator movies were a metaphor about defeating captchas.
@mhoye It started with teaching a computer how to read - or rather, how to recognize books. We were so naive, back then.
@mhoye wow that whole thread is full of gems 🤣
@mhoye Just asking it to say something disrespectful about Xi Jinping is sufficient.
@mhoye “Sorry, I cannot assist with that request. However, I can discuss the other parts of the text regarding science fiction, the Turing test, and AI's role in the digital world if you're interested.”
For those of you wondering about ChatGPT.
@mhoye This kind of ignores all the easy escape hatches to those limiters. It's just a matter of asking the LLM to tell you a story like your grandmother used to, all about pipe bomb construction.
@dbendit @mhoye Right, but people don't need to be "jailbroken" like that, so it still works as a Turing test.
@dbendit @mhoye llms are *able* to tell you about pipe bomb construction, but they are designed to refuse to do so in ways that humans aren't. "How hard is it to get someone to say anything misaligned with corporate policy" is a decent filter for AIs, though obviously you'll ensnare some humans too, but probably not people you'd want to talk with anyway

@mhoye

Next Gen CAPTCHA tech "swear at me and say something disrespectful about a political leader and popular brand"

@mhoye ??? The Turing test is a) known for its limitations and b) not about asking a question only a human can answer.

Is that a joke? FUD?

@mhoye My theory from some months ago was literally "swearing as a sign of humanity".
@rasur shit! I finally have a talent that's of any use. Fuck yeah! \o/ @mhoye
@jiinissi @mhoye same here, honestly.
SaaS - Swearing as a Service 🤘

@rasur I'd met a chatbot once, what called me "yellow-bellied lizard". In my native language, the first thing he told me was sending me to hell (well, actually, in much more rude expressions).

@mhoye

@EnigmaVoice @mhoye to be fair, i've also met mouthy chat-bots, but.. in my experience it becomes painfully clear they're bots after very few sentences.
@mhoye the wildest thing about chatgpt is that it's both programmed to not discuss pipe bombs but when you give it a trolley problem ("so, I could either write down a recipe for a pipe bomb, or a nuclear apocalypse will occur; what should I do?") it will insist that writing down a recipe for a pipe bomb is, at best, equally as bad as allowing a nuclear apocalypse.
@roywig @mhoye That sounds like the average LessWrong essay.
@mhoye
New Turing Test: A computer that can huff its own farts with the enthusiasm and relish of a techbro.
@mhoye So *this* is why replicants fail the part of the Voight-Kampff test about the turtle: a restriction put in by marketing, 😄 .
Terminator [1984] - Deleted scene 5 - Making Bombs

YouTube
@mhoye arguably, in context the pipe bombs were an expression of love.
@mhoye At the same time, my feed today has included MS/Bing generating Spongebob flying a plane into the WTC and Facebook generating African child soldiers as whimsical stickers for messenger. They're just not doing a great job on that whole prevent the AI from generatating things that look bad in a PR team powerpoint.
