Speaker McCarthy was ousted by his own party members yesterday, and he has no plans to run again. This leaves the GOP adrift and leaderless, but it’s hard to tell the difference, right? They haven’t had true leadership in more than eight months.
Now there’s talk of even nominating Donald Trump to the position. Fun fact: The GOP House rules don’t allow leaders who’ve been indicted on serious federal charges carrying 2+ years prison sentence to serve. Wonder if they’d change the rules, just for Donald.

@georgetakei

Speaker of the House doesn't have to be a member of the House? TIL

@georgetakei I'm sure we'll have the idiot caucus voting for just that.
@georgetakei Donald Trump isn't a member of the House of Representatives, & Section 3 of the 14th Amendment would also apply if he ran for a seat in Congress. He wouldn't be eligible to sit there - or in the Senate. It would take a two-thirds majority in both Houses to remove the disability, as with the Presidency.
@georgetakei the problem is they can't change the rules or do anything until there is a speaker.
@georgetakei They can't do any changes until they select a new Speaker. :)
@georgetakei
Since WHEN would rules apply to the_donald?
@georgetakei Someone needs to point out (to Trump) that Speaker has no pardon powers. ;)
@georgetakei Don't the house rules also disallow a presidential impeachment inquiry without a full house vote? And yet...
@georgetakei Of course they would. The lower limit does not exist.
@georgetakei
That rule blocking Trump wouldn't last a second. It'd die faster than the DeSantis rule.
@georgetakei probably if he instructs them to do so.
@georgetakei President - Vice President - Speaker of the House. This is the order/line of succession. I certainly hope that all lines of protection for the President and Vice President are fortified. The GOP cannot function and win elections within the bounds of our constitution and laws and their only way to gain the absolute power they desire is through a violent power grab. I hope I'm just being paranoid.
@georgetakei Matt Gaetz accused McCarthy of collaborating with Democrats, yet himself needed their help to remove him. Oh, the irony.
@georgetakei I wonder if McCarthy's removal will help or hurt Democrats. I worry it will hurt everyone and most voters won't be paying enough attention or care enough to see this as different from fighting between the two parties. There is also the worry the next speaker will be worse, but it's hard to tell what will happen.

@georgetakei don't you mean 63 years?

Since they first nominated Nixon.

@georgetakei The Democrats have been given an opportunity to pick the next Republican Speaker of the House. All they have to do is nominate a moderate Republican and stand solidly behind him or her. Then only a handful of Republican votes would be needed to get him or her elected as Speaker. Then we all would enjoy the spectacle of watching the extremist Republican's heads explode. 💥

@MrToyMRY @georgetakei

You bring up a logical course of action that obviously would be something the Republicans would reject, primarily because of the continuing influence of Trump.

To follow that course, the R agenda would have to change to be moderate enough to allow negotiation and compromise. Trump will settle for nothing less than 'purification,' in the authoritarian/oligarchic model.

There are two immediate hurdles that need to be overcome, to break this fever. Trump must be thoroughly repudiated, AND JAILED, and Fox News and its clones have to be at least held to standards of truth. Until then, we will see this madness and rage.

@georgetakei what have we learned today, kids? When the turn up the bass, the speaker gets blown out.
…. I’ll see myself out.

@georgetakei

Or any concrete agenda beyond crippling/dismantling the administrative state and owning the libs.

@georgetakei When it comes to 45 or ANY Republicans, the rules or laws do not apply to them. Yes, charges may be brought against them but are they ever held accountable??? No!!
