Just created a Bluesky account. See you there?
I’m somewhat surprised by the many negative responses to this — you’re aware that all of those platforms suck, right? Bluesky sucks and the fediverse sucks, albeit for different reasons. Twitter has always sucked. We’re all just trying to find a place that maybe-kind-of works, and that’s the best we can hope for. #MyTwoCents
@fMRI_guy the only good social media was livejournal circa 2004. Down hill all the way since then.
@fMRI_guy What's negative about a "Nope" (my answer) after you asked if you'll see some of us on Bluesky (your question if I recall correctly)? Tbh I generally don't give 2 fucks about who spies on me, no matter if it's X, Google, Microsoft or whoever. Hell, I even play World of Warcraft and use Discord. But I love myself this little delusive fediverse peace where sumppl really have to _work_ to become the same shining beacons of yellery as they were on X (_not you_). Makes me giggle.
@fMRI_guy And I especially love the whining of the yellery sumppl, if their usual strategies don't work out. Makes me giggle some more, if I happen to stumble upon it.
@Impertinenzija Apologies, I didn't mean to imply that your response was inappropriate at all. And I absolutely see your point.
@fMRI_guy But they all suck for different reasons. The VC funded platforms have proven time and time again that they reliably suck more and more with age when open systems, with a little patience, reliably suck less given time. The negative reaction stems from people banging their head against the wall realising that this fact has not become common knowledge yet.
@micron @fMRI_guy Agreed. The biggest problem with Mastodon are some of its users, which can be easily blocked (and en-masse blocked if a particular instance refuses to get rid of its problematic users). The biggest problem with *all* the others are the owners, who you can't block, and are tyrannical despots who act like they're entitled to all your information in exchange for providing a forum.
@StarkRG @micron Absolutely fair points; thank you both for elaborating

@fMRI_guy @micron No worries, while I won't be following you to blewskey, I do hope you don't abandon Mastodon.

The greatest advantage of Mastodon is that, if you don't like the owners of your instance you have a couple of options. You can either find another instance and move all your follows, followers, bookmarks, and favourites (though, sadly, not your past toots, that's a feature that *desperately* needs to be added) or you can run your own instance for about 1GB of ram and 15GB of storage.

@StarkRG @fMRI_guy Those irritating problem users, in their mild form, can also easily be ignored in the same way you ignore a drunk guy on the street who's talking shit. Also in general I contest the common complaint that those do not exist on other platforms. 😀
@micron @fMRI_guy To be honest, if I had the capability, I absolutely would remove said loud, drunk guy from my perception. Maybe it's the autism or the cPTSD, but I don't do well with ignoring loud, potentially dangerous assholes.
@StarkRG @fMRI_guy That's understood and why if necessary it is always OK to use that block hammer IMO.

@fMRI_guy
I think we have a ways to go in terms of these platforms.

I'm also less than thrilled with discussion forums for my classes: D2L is terrible, Slack kills your messages after 90 days, and the best I've found is Discord.

I'm waiting for my favorite developer at OpenClass to come up with something better.

@dpat I’m disappointed by that situation as well. I use Slack for work and another app for communication with my kids’ school, and neither really works fluently for me

@fMRI_guy

Why?
People leaving X to go to Bluesky is a bit like like a thirsty person leaving the Sahara to look for water in the Namib 😆

Plus, Musk already bought Blueboobs:

🤣

If anyone, academics really should know better and not repeat past mistakes:

@fMRI_guy tell them all to come over here instead

@fMRI_guy

Is there a “there” there yet? Haven’t quite seen one.

@fMRI_guy Nope. I hope you will keep your main presence here!
@fMRI_guy Thou shalt not mention The Other Network
