why are so many game devs living on a boat

what am I missing

@fasterthanlime I didn't know about this "trend". Which ones are living on boats ? ⛵
@playest I’m not telling! (But I know of at least two boats)
@fasterthanlime Secrets, secret ^^ I read an article about living on a barge some time ago and it's pretty cheap but there is no guarantee that you'll ba allowed to stay long term.

@fasterthanlime @playest my theory would be the fact that living on a boat, similar to game development, is a highly romanticized concept. Its just an extension of their nature.

Generally speaking, its not cheaper. Its definitely not safer.

@fasterthanlime @playest tbh i know a lot of gamedevs and not one lives on a boat.
@fasterthanlime For once, you are missing the boat.
@fasterthanlime #boatlife best life, honestly, I've be tempted often.

@fasterthanlime Better water simulations :p
@fasterthanlime there once was a plan to put a bunch of devs on a boat near Los Angeles for example - just far enough out that labor laws no longer applied.
@fasterthanlime The game development process goes a lot faster if you live in constant fear of your equipment being destroyed by the sea.
@fasterthanlime housing is expensive and game dev isn't a lucrative career.
@fasterthanlime why worry about memory leaks when you can worry about hull leaks
