My #UCLChemAirPoll class this morning was followed by a lecture on postmodernism. The lecturercould not connect her Mac to the projector. She had a back up of her presentation on the main network. But she could not get the computer to log her in. She was looking increasingly stressed… So I took her laptop, turned it on its side with the screen facing up and turned on the visualizer. And Lo! her presentation was projected on the screen.
She called me "a genius". Nah. I'm just old. Seen stuff…

And @eLearningTechie, lest I get too cocky with this "genius" stuff, I got a dose of my own medicine today for another #UCLChemAirPoll class. The HDMI connexion in the remote ICH lecture theatre wouldn't connect. So I did the visualizer/laptop screen trick.
A nice man from AV Svcs turned up after my class. So I turned the projector system back on to show him the problem and the damned problem had gone away. I had been hoist by the old turn-it-off-and-on-again petard. #rookieerror

@sellathechemist oops! Yes, always always do the turn it off / on thing first. It's amazing how many weird connection errors that can solve.

@eLearningTechie Every time I've had to do that, I've got a huge laugh and applause from the students.
Today a mike wasn't working in Logan Hall so I just bellowed for about 7 minutes until a nice man from AV Services sorted it out.
He got a big round of applause from 400 students (to 1 s.f.)

@sellathechemist I'm grateful for every resourceful academic who can deal with such cases without throwing an enormous tantrum every time. It's hard to maintain such a huge and diverse estate and equipment stock, so stuff is bound to go poop occasionally. Yes, of course it's annoying and shouldn't happen, but... You get my applause, too.

I've often said that some vocal coaching should be an essential part of teacher training. Being able to throw your voice (as opposed to shouting) is such a handy technique - much less tiring and gentler on the vocal chords than just 'speaking louder' (or shouting).
