Nature desk-rejected their paper!

This is right up there with the way the Nobel Committee used to tweet happy birthday to Russell Hulse, then mention that it also happened to be the anniversary of Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovering pulsars.

The definition of chutzpah is killing your parents, then begging the court to have mercy because you're an orphan.
Penn demoted Karikó, removing her from the tenure track and making her an "adjunct associate professor." They also cut her salary. They should be issuing a public apology. Completely shameless.

Should have been so easy.

“Science is hard, and so is figuring out who is likely to make meaningful contributions. We’ve been doing it a long time, but we still make mistakes. We got this one wrong. Congratulations to Dr. Karikó on this well deserved honor, and our apologies for choosing not to support her and her work.”

@mcnees @bkeegan good reminder that the gatekeepers of institutions don’t always get it right

Scary to think about other brilliant people who got filtered out but might otherwise have had great contributions

@mcnees the amount of blockading utter bullshit she had to slog thru to get to the point her work was embraced and possibly saved us all.
Makes me see all my obstacles as minor annoyances by comparison
@mcnees They should also write her a big fat check for back pay.
@mcnees damn this story needs way more attention. i went to see the tweet and all the replies are either bland congratulations or shit about bill gates 5G genocide injections 😑
@mcnees I posted yesterday that I hope Penn (I went there for grad school) comes with a big bonus and hefty back pay, here they are acting all proud she’s there when they haven’t acted as such. I didn’t even realize until this morning (I’m in Europe) that she doesn’t have tenure! Meanwhile, they will fundraise so much off having a Nobel Prize winner faculty member. Embarrassing.

@mcnees ... yes and, ...

The world has known about who has developed the mRNA technology for some time, so I'm a little surprised that they haven't been hired away by another institution or already promoted or given an incredible multi-year contract.

Oh wait, I was thinking about soccer players. :-(

Follow the money, I'll bet that there's an even uglier story to be found when we discover who actually owns the work they did ...

@mcnees we shouldn’t idolize institutions that treat women like they are less than. They should be shamed. Thank you for doing it ❤️
