It's here!
Prepare!
Take Heed!
May this toot be the Harbinger of your Halloween!

It's:
🎃 Burd's #31NightsOfHorror 🎃

This marks year 7 (but year 1 on Masto). That's wild. Feel free to mute the 31 Nights hash OR follow along with me this month. Every post in this thread after this toot will only be under the 31 Nights hash until the end of Oct. New platform does mean potential kinks to work out.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror 2023

The full watchlist for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror 2023. This includes the original scheduled movie for each night and all the Music Box Of Horrors 24h Marathon entries, PLUS all BOO-nus 👻 Movies that get added on the fly. If need be, this list is subject to change before October 1st based on availability, updates to the MBoH schedule, etc. During the actual month of October, any sudden changes to the schedule will be clearly marked (with notes when applicable). This year I'm pre-planning larger blocks of themed watches. It's probably overly ambitious. Fright in the Brites is a work related event…

Kicking off Burd's #31NightsOfHorror with a midnight inaugural Pre-Show BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

I went out of my way this year to import a Blu-ray of Over the Garden Wall. 1000% worth it.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Throwing on yearly staple as a BOO-nus 👻 Watch before tonight's real kick off.

Gilda Radner in Witch's Night Out (1978) deserves to be on EVERYONE'S list. Perfect weird Halloween vibes.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The BOO-nus 👻 Bus keeps rolling.

Now:

Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

"Heresy? Heresy. Do they still burn men for heresy? Then burn me, monsieur. Light the fire."

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Micro theme between Over the Garden Wall and Murders in the Rue Morgue?

Man in a gorilla suit, of course.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Ok first official entry for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror. A first time watch that I hunted down a copy to own.

Cherry Falls (2000)

Moving on to tonight's next selection, a film that didn't quite hit me the first time but slowly I grew my own hunger to rewatch it. When I did, I felt abundantly satiated. Now it is a beloved favorite. An acquired taste, if you will.

(eh? eh? Thess jokes working for you?)

Now cooking:

Julia Ducurnau's Raw (2016)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The third and final film in tonight's little "Coming of Age" triology kick off to Burd's #31NightsOfHorror is an all time classic.

"They're all gonna laugh at you!"

Carrie (1976)

A preview of tonight's Burd's #31NightsOfHorror mini themed double feature, "Going Deutsch?".*

And yes, the first film is technically Austrian and the second film's production history has some yikes:

Angst (1983) & Der Fan (1982)

*points to those who caught this throwaway Psych reference.

The emotion I most felt in highschool.

First time watching:

Angst (1983)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Off the bat, I'm not sure I can decide what is more unsettling:

The content of the narration or the very present sound design.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

So I stumbled onto this earlier this year renting a DVD of it from the unusual record and curiosities shop I've come to occasionally haunt.

I sought out a copy for myself after viewing it because, well I'm not exactly sure. This film got in my head. Incredibly problematic art.

Now watching:

Der Fan (1982)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The more I think about it during this rewatch, the more I'm sure this would make a really good double feature with Burning (2018).

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

We're gonna keep "Going Deutsch?" with a BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

Why the hell not, let's see what The German Chainsaw Massacre (1990) has in store for us. Or...Blackest Heart. What a terrible alternate title.

Also, apparently Udo Kier is in this because...of course he is.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Oh the places we'll go.

Udo Kier is certainly...unforgettable in this.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Tonight's Burd's #31NightsOfHorror pick is one of those films that I just never quite got around to watching before but I have listened to many a podcast recap and review. This has resulted in me having a very specific idea in my head of this film but I acknowledge it is a pretty glaring blindspot.

It's going to feel really good to finally check it off the list later tonight.

I understand why a lot of modern movies withhold their title card until the end. But, damnit, I love even the most basic opening title because I too am basic.

Now watching for the first time (apologizes Mr. Raimi):

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Uhhhh, yeah. Like I wasn't immediately gonna put this on right after Drag Me to Hell as a BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

It's The Evil Dead, baby!

The Evil Dead (1981)
Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I went to look at my original review of The Evil Dead as I was getting ready to start it up. And you know what? It is a really satisfying feeling to read a piece of writing from a few years ago that I still 100% stand by.

Like, if I had to write it again today, I wouldn't change a got dang thing.

It's not terribly profound but I certainly am terribly proud of it.

A review of The Evil Dead (1981)

Love | Like | Indifferent | Dislike Love a cabin in the woods. Watching a 4k of a 16mm film is weirdly cool. I've said in the past, this movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. I turned it off at the porch swing shot my first time watching because it creeped me out so bad, but that shot is burned into my head. The cinematography and editing works so damn well so a low budget production. Cut down, balls to the wall horror, but seriously the tree doesn't age well. Shout out to perfect Cheryl, fifth

@chicagoburdman Is it streaming somewhere?
@stina_marie there are YT and Internet Archive rips available, I also see it is streaming on Tubi.
