One side effect of a government #shutdown is people are going to get a reminder of how important the government actually is.
Here's an example.

The National Flood Insurance Program expires alongside the government's funding at 12:01 a.m. Sunday. If lawmakers do not reauthorize the program, about 1,300 property closings each day could be delayed.

There will be thousands of other reminders of what the government actually does for us.

Government shutdown poised to halt federal flood insurance program

A looming government shutdown could delay hundreds of real estate transactions each day and cause a shock to the industry because some home buyers will be unable to secure flood insurance, industry and flood experts said.

@petergleick How important is government for the folks out there?

Don't complain after not voting!

Don't complain after not getting informed, with all the information out there, ready to jump into your face, when your umbrella's not open.

@ArenaCops @petergleick
This Republican caused shutdown may be just the shot in the arm that helps to protect our democracy better.

We should get a good view of it in the Virginia elections in a little over a month.

@GreenFire @ArenaCops @petergleick

I naively thought this way when the economy collapsed in 2008, based entirely on circumstances created by the primacy of Reaganomics and trickle-down theory over the previous three decades.

Now people will see, I thought. Now Republicans will have to admit that their policies were nonsense, or worse. They'd been objectively proven to be disastrous!

Didn't happen. They blamed Obama, who wouldn't be elected until two months after the collapse.

@kingkaufman @ArenaCops @petergleick
Possibly, but there are more people paying attention now than there were back when Bush junior and his funders trashed the global economy and got away with it I think.

Democrats have exceeded their past share of the vote in this year’s special elections by an average of 11 percentage points and this will hopefully carry over to next year. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/09/do-democratic-special-election-wins-matter-for-biden-2024.html

@kingkaufman @GreenFire @ArenaCops @petergleick There was actually a two pronged defense. Blame Obama was for the common person and blame Greenspan was for the economists and academics.

@GreenFire @petergleick It's McCarthy's parliamentary duty to keep the radical insurrectionary Confederate extremists in his organization's ranks from sabotaging the functionality of the people's U.S. government for the benefit of & in service for Putin & Xi.
He'd better call on the microscopic remainder of "Republicans", who got the kinda balls to put country over treason & insurrection to join the Dems for a vote to avoid a devastating & anti-American government shutdown initiated by the enemies of the Union, democracy & the people of the United States.
Forced government shutdown is sabotage threatening national security.

@ArenaCops @petergleick
The Speaker of the House is second in line to the most powerful position in the history of the universe and it is beyond parody that anyone would suggest that anyone besides Speaker McCarthy is responsible for not getting legislation passed to keep the government functioning.

It's the bare minimum duty of the position he holds.

It takes 30 days for a #DischargePetition to get a floor vote in the House so I'm hoping that the sane Representatives have it ready Monday.

@petergleick nobody will get it. get ready for a lot of “thanks brandon”
