If my agency is going to tell people to talk to their supervisor about options for dealing with missing paychecks during the government shutdown, they should give the supervisors some ideas on what to fucking talk about.

I had an employee ask me for advice yesterday and very few of the options I'm aware of applied to their situation so.... fuck I don't know.

Also there's a weird irony in talking to a college student about the benefits of government work (stability, especially in tech right now) while simultaneously sending a current employee information on local food banks.

Personally I'm looking forward to a forced vacation and I'll be fine. I have plenty of resources and while I'm the major breadwinner, my husband makes enough to cover food and utilities. We'll be fine.

I'm starting to stress about my young, single employees who don't have much of a safety net

@computerpaws Sorry for my ignorance, does this whole thing mean you don't get paid for the shutdown but will be returning to work when it's over? This is terrible. I thought you'd be compensated later after reopening.
@elisse @computerpaws Congress has to approve repayment after the shutdown, they have most of the time, but there is no requirement on them to.
@Frazzld @computerpaws So you're sent home with no pay and there's a chance you won't get paid for the gap. Wow.

@elisse @Frazzld nah, they passed a law in 2019 that requires backpay now. So there's at least assurance that we'll get paid eventually

(Fixed typo)

@elisse @Frazzld my senior engineer pointed out that if everyone is guaranteed pay, then they should just have us work instead of paying us to sit at home doing nothing.

He's not wrong...

@computerpaws @elisse I wonder how many like me don't know about that law, my Gov't guys here are a bit worried. I'm contract so I'll keep working myself

@Frazzld @elisse my boss's boss didn't know about it last week, and I don't think any official communications have mentioned it.

My office has 1 onsite contractor right now, so he's been sitting in random status meetings this week to help out our skeleton crew who will be in during the shutdown. He'll have an interesting time
