Republicans passed a ~$2 trillion tax cut for the rich and added $7 trillion to the national debt under Trump. And we're supposed to believe they're risking a shutdown because they care about "fiscal responsibility"?

It's all just a game to them.

@rbreich Socialism for the rich and personal responsibility for the rest of us is their credo.

@rbreich
So make it so that shutdowns hurt the wealthy the most. They can afford it the most.

But then Dems also worship the wealthy.

@Silversalty How, though?

The oligarchs love it when the government is shutdown. It is the most vulnerable among us who need a functioning government the most.

@rbreich

Kind of bizarre that Republicans DEMAND fiscal responsibility; i.e. Shaft the poor, while in fact they always create HUGE deficits

@rbreich

The game of Monopoly writ large.

Somehow, the decks seem stacked with 'Get Out of Jail Free' cards, and missing 'Pay to Community Chest' cards.

@Robert Reich That's what you get in a two party system: each party will fight the other to the death, while improving the country comes second. At best...

Add two or three parties to the mix, and suddenly they'll have to negotiate and find support, instead of being mf'ing assholes.
@rbreich
GOP chief is a Fucking moron. Is it surprising?
@rbreich they were allowed to use a shutdown as a bargaining chip once, so now they have to "get something out of it" every time it comes around
@rbreich Of course. They have no principles, only tactics

@rbreich

It’s not a game, it’s the plan. Kill the hated liberal government under massive and unnecessary debt.

@rbreich The irony of the "fiscal responsibility" argument isn't lost on me. Seems like the term is thrown around only when it's convenient.
@rbreich
You can't keep cutting taxes for your wealthy regressive-right donors unless you cut government services for everyone else.
This is Republican MOCs' reason for existing.

@rbreich

Donors to Republicans: We do not care if you get re-elected. We only care that you give us what we paid you for in this term.

Republicans to Donors: How high?
