@jonobie In theory it’s part of city building code for places that admit the public. it is routinely ignored except by eg restaurants and bars. the tunnel transit stations should all have public toilets per this code — similar code in Auburn and other outlying suburban towns forced Sound Transit to put restrooms in at Sounder stations.

@rachael @jonobie who will enforce toilet accommodation law, the SPD? Not having public access to sanitary elimination and hand washing is a #publichealth nightmare. Along with #corporatepharm control of vaccine distribution, privatized “comfort stations” are #businessfail In Ballard PCC has those “real estate agent” locks, privatizing space within private space and definitely discriminatory toward unhoused, though it’s really city and county responsibility.
@odaraia @jonobie I don’t think it’s an SPD level thing. The council and mayor clearly don’t consider it a priority so we need some policy that makes it so businesses keep restrooms open sustainably. I’m not sure what that looks like. :/
@rachael @jonobie agreed that city politics make toilet policies nearly impossible. An infamous attempt at #publicwashrooms 20 years ago was costly and increased fear of drug users. The reasonable solution is #safeinjectionsites for drug use and many well maintained, accessible, #toilets, showers. Journalist Erica C Barnett has covered these issues, and their intersections extensively on dead bird site and her online Publicola https://publicola.com/masthead/

@rachael @jonobie Forgive my sarcasm about the SPD. It’s the only city government agency Harrell seems to want to fund, that and anti-graffiti patrols. https://southseattleemerald.com/2023/09/17/doom-loop-7-press-conference/
