Whats that you say, favoriting a post is functionally useless because there's no algorithm on Mastodon?

Tell that to my instant gratification addicted lizard brain that's getting hit with a tidal wave of dopamine every time my phone vibrates.

@lowqualityfacts Phones are supposed to go in your pocket, not in your... Just kidding. I love that this place doesn't use some shitty cis white-man-centric algorithm to try and tell me what I should be looking at or liking.
@lowqualityfacts
I'm gonna like, share and leave a comment to maximize your dopamine
@lowqualityfacts Boost, Like and Bookmark, the' 'dancing around your home office' trifecta 😆
@lowqualityfacts That's another high quality fact. Stop it! I followed for the low quality facts.
:-)

@lowqualityfacts can I offer you a cabbage in this trying time?

Warning: NSFW content below

@lowqualityfacts Favoriting a post means basically nothing except to the original poster.

So favoriting a post is telling the original poster they matter.

Favorite a post to brighten somebody's day.

Nobody's rich? Many are queer?
Losing the nazis sure makes it nice here
But where are the bots?
I never see bots
I hope not next year

(Thank you Stephen Sondheim.)

@lowqualityfacts I do not want my phone to vibrate a lot. A little bit is okay.
@lowqualityfacts you should probably turn notifications off 😂
@lowqualityfacts favourited to make your phone buzz.
@lowqualityfacts That was definitely an informative and interesting "low quality fact due to the fact there's no algorithm on Mastodon.
@lowqualityfacts Favouriting a public post makes it appear higher on the explore page, same as a boost, as long as the author is opted-in...
@Gargron Thank you for the information captain, I promise that I will try my best to lower the quality for my next post.
@Gargron @lowqualityfacts an algorithm?!? on the #Fediverse ??

@wagesj45

Folks don’t like to admit it, but even “show the most recent post first” is an algorithm.

Yes, #fediverse has algorithms.
The question is whether we want choices of better ones or not.

@Gargron @lowqualityfacts

@volkris @Gargron @lowqualityfacts i have a dream of an open standard for content sorting. some kind of limited structured query language for content on timelines. maybe we could even subscribe to our favorite "Hot" and "For You" algorithms and actually be able to see what they're doing with some transparency.

@wagesj45

I think the key is for different interfaces to offer users choices to pick what algorithm they want. I’m all about empowering users to get the experience they want.

It doesn’t even have to be standardized. Mastodon could offer one set of options while another platform offers a different set.

@Gargron @lowqualityfacts

@volkris @wagesj45 @Gargron @lowqualityfacts Algorithm is such an overused and under-understood word. As you mentioned - most people don’t get - any method of sorting uses an algorithm. :)
@lowqualityfacts I'm not sure what it says about someone if they think letting a post's author know you liked their post is "functionally useless"
Matt Sicker (@[email protected])

Ok I’ve decoded the trending algorithm. Calling it an algorithm is overselling it as long division is more complicated than this. Maybe we can put this in a LaTeX document to make it seem fancier. 🧵

Infosec Exchange
@lowqualityfacts so, am I technically your porn?

@lowqualityfacts

It vibrated for the BOOST I just gave your post, too!

Just sayin'

@lowqualityfacts We are Mastodon's algorithm. :proud:

@lowqualityfacts

I get anxiety attacks when my phone goes off from notifications. I never know if it's a troll. I have this problem with craving attention, but then hating it once I get it. Lol

@lowqualityfacts At this point I use it as a mark to show what posts I've read already. That's about the only function is has for me, but it is a useful one :D
