It's time for this month's #VulvaDiversity thread. This month, we're taking a look at the labia majora (outer lips) and the mons.

As always, this thread will contain photos of human vulvas. They'll be behind a content wrapper, but if you have those switched off, you might want to put them back on. Also, you get blocked for vulva-shaming or sexualised remarks in the replies, so keep your opinions to yourself.

Many of the vulvas we'll be looking at today are mostly or entirely shaved. This is because pubic hair grows on the mons and labia majora, meaning we can't look at the features as well.

Both the mons and the labia majora are made up of fatty tissue. This tissue responds to oestrogen, which means that they will grow at puberty, and decrease after menopause.

The area where the labia majora meet the mons is known as the pudendal cleft. In slang, it's sometimes called the camel toe or moose knuckle.

Because the mons and labia majora are raised, you'll frequently see a "junction line" - a pair of diagonal lines forming a downward-facing triangle between the belly and the thigh.

The labia majora vary in shape and size. Some are quite small, and can be almost flat, or with a slight curve.

Some labia majora are larger. They could be thicker, plumper or more rounded than the surrounding area.

The skin of the mons is very similar to the skin surrounding it on the belly and the thighs - the key exception is that it grows pubic hair. The skin of the labia majora is slightly different. During foetal development, they form from labioscrotal folds, which go on to become a scrotum if exposed to androgens.

The skin of the labia majora has a honeycomb-like texture. To some degree or another, it's more textured than surrounding skin, but how much varies from person to person. The skin may also be somewhat wrinkled or creased in appearance.

Labia majora are sisters, not always twins. It's perfectly normal for one to appear a bit plumper, rounder, longer or bigger than the other.

It's also perfectly normal for your labia majora to be the same colour as the surrounding skin... but perfectly normal for it to be darker, too!
