Well, I had to try it…

Interesting: some apps like Audible which have settings to only download while on WiFi really stick to just that - they won’t download if the phone is connected to Ethernet. Others like Downcast are fine with it, though they have the same kind of WiFi-only preference.

I assume some are checking “not cellular” and some are checking “on WiFi” perhaps? I know nothing about iOS apps, curious though!

Just ordered a 2.5Gbps USB-C dongle. I shall report back.

Alrighty, grabbed a few more transceivers and a 2.5Gb/s dongle. Here’s what an iPerf run from that same iPhone 15 Pro looks like (hitting a 2x10Gb LACP server), in the ~2.0-2.3Gb/s range.

…I have no idea what you’d do with this, I was just curious.

After some feedback, I have now ordered a USB-C 5Gbps adapter. Y'all are a bunch of troublemakers.
@Nick_Craver *Breaks out thunderbolt 3 adapter with AQC107 inside*
@Nick_Craver 🤯 I wasn’t in the market for a new phone but maybe I am now 🤪
@Nick_Craver I’ve successfully used a USB 5GBase-T adapter with an iPad Pro, I assume it works with the new phone too. I’m not aware of any that go up to 10G, you’d need Thunderbolt for that.
@pmdj ...how are you gonna send that without including a buy link?!?
@Nick_Craver I have this one, but looks like it’s out of stock: https://www.amazon.com/Type-C-5GbE-Adapter-QNA-UC5G1T-QNAP/dp/B07RKLQPLP/
Ought to work with any tho, eg https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-5-Gigabit-Ethernet-Adapter-NT-SS5G/dp/B08977K9D2/
Mine gets very hot so probably runs down the battery pretty fast or may not even work without a PSU on a phone.

@Nick_Craver @pmdj This makes me wonder about the phone’s capabilities with a usb c dock. Could we hook up an external display, Ethernet, power and either Bluetooth or usb keyboard and mouse. Mobile work… or RDP back to the real machine in the office.
@turtleonabike @Nick_Craver Your main Limitation there is software, and what Apple will allow App Store Apps to do. On iPad, an external mouse will at least cause a mouse cursor of sorts (round blob, ugh) to show, and there’s some side-by-side multitasking. iPhones have so far blocked pointing HID devices (apps can’t directly access them either). I believe there are special non-HID-compliant Mice specifically to work around that, but they’ll only work in 1 app at a time.
@turtleonabike @Nick_Craver I think there are RDP apps that will work with such mice and the keyboard, and will put this all on the external screen. The main innovation on the iPhone 15 series I guess is that it can drive decent resolutions and doesn’t need a proprietary adapter. The Lightning HDMI adapter would only output up to 1080p which is upscaled from 900p IIRC.
I tried working natively with my iPad Pro when I first got it, but found it frustratingly unproductive.
@pmdj @Nick_Craver Yeah, me too. It is close but still has a few rough edges.
@turtleonabike @Nick_Craver I found switching between apps to just be too slow and awkward; text editing somehow retains the fluffy, imprecise feel even when using the keyboard and mouse; and for my purposes specifically, Apple’s Sandbox restrictions preclude me from doing most of my work on the device itself. I find it extra frustrating because the hardware is so capable.
@Nick_Craver which iperf client is that?
@Nick_Craver noticed the same with #Fedilab, when I was trying out if my KVM works with my Android phone. HDMI, ethernet, mouse and keyboard working fine, but images did not autoload as on cellular.
@Nick_Craver That is true, I had the same issue with Nextcloud automatic uploads on Ethernet. I reported it and they fixed it, so it may be possible!
@paulos
Can you set the Ethernet connection as unmetered, or is that limited to wireless networks?
@Nick_Craver

@hutchinsonmini Uhh, good question to which I do not know the answer now. But probably not.

Actually I have just noticed that Nick was talking about iOS and I was talking about Android... :D

@Nick_Craver

@Nick_Craver the apps can check for Wi-Fi or for wired ethernet, typically every app just checks for Wi-Fi ignoring wired ethernet because it is not very common.
