I take no pleasure in saying this, but it looks like #Bluesky might the the platform academics are converging on
@fgilardi If I may ask, because you see a lot of academics going there, or because you've tried and seen it works better for academics?
@mattiaguidi just got an invite and joined, and I’m seeing a lot of political scientists there. Also, similar vibe as old academic Twitter
@fgilardi
I don't know... I couldn't look at it yet. Anything is better than current X, but it seems to me they're keeping it secluded forever, and until it remains that way it's very difficult to tell how it will look like once it goes open.
@mattiaguidi @fgilardi I opened my #Bluesky account almost a month ago. My early impression is that while there are many academics from social sciences using the platform regularly, vast majority of them are based in the US and the platform looks almost completely English-speaking. Mastodon's academic community seems much more diverse to me. But unfortunately, none of them comes close to Musk's X when it comes to the presence of intellectuals and activists from the Middle East or Latin America.
@SerhatTutkal @mattiaguidi there seems to have been a significant intake recently (myself included). Lots of Europe-based folks. Mastodon hasn’t taken off among political (social?) scientists unfortunately
@fgilardi @SerhatTutkal
My ideal platform wouldn't have just academics, but a good balance of academics, journalists, and also regular people. In the end, the success (or lack thereof) of a platform depend on the presence of regular users who interact with experts and opinion leaders. No platform so far is getting to that.
@mattiaguidi @fgilardi @SerhatTutkal good to know internet nobodies like me are a hot commodity. 😄 I agree, that sounds like an ideal mix. Personally, I miss EU shitposters and Spanish gay twitter. Those two crowds intersecting during EUCOs or Eurovision (same vibe) has produced some of the best content on 🇪🇺 internet.
@Veza85UE @fgilardi @SerhatTutkal
No offence! I just meant that I don't want to read about research and papers all the time on a platform. ;)
@mattiaguidi @fgilardi @SerhatTutkal none taken, I read it in its original spirit.
I don't want to read news and complain all the time either, I need cats (tbf Mastodon has outstanding #caturday content), memes and cringe in between all the europolitics.
@mattiaguidi @fgilardi I don't think we will have everyone at the same platform any time soon. It looks different communities will have a strong presence in distinct platforms.
@SerhatTutkal
I don't want "everybody" on a platform, I just meant there has to be some active base, to make your feed "alive". Then of course, it might be that someone's Mastodon feed doesn't meet somebody else's needs. If you only use a platform to connect with your peers, you'll go where your peers go.
@mattiaguidi Yes, I agree. The thing is that most of us have lots of different groups of peers. In my case they post in various different languages. Even though not everyone was on Twitter, there were enough people from the communities, which made the platform very effective for communication and organization. Now I feel a bit like the days of internet forums when you go from one website to another to interact with distinct people. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is time consuming.
@SerhatTutkal
For me for instance, Twitter has always been much more about commenting political news rather than connecting with fellow political scientists (though it was nice that I could do both). I've found no other place so far where I can do the first thing, so I keep my account alive even though I like the platform less and less.
@SerhatTutkal I mean my Twitter (alas, X) account.
@mattiaguidi It is similar for me too. If I delete my Twitter account I may not see the videos showing police violence in Kurdistan or some posts about the state violence. It has been the principal reasons why I was using Twitter since I left the country, and as long as people keep posting the things there I have to go check them even though I post less and less.
