Finally ready to share images of where my accident happened. Tl;dr I was coming into this tunnel and rang my bell as I always do. A man was coming out pretty fast with headphones on and we didn’t see each other until a collision was imminent. I braked to avoid hitting him, but my wheel slid on the metal (probably) and my bike slid left. I went right. My head and face (my tooth) hit the metal. Not pictured: a concussion, bruises everywhere, knee that’s still healing. #biketooter #yycbike #cycling
I think you can see pretty clearly where my temple hit a bolt (on the helmet). I was so focused on my tooth/bleeding knee that I didn't even think my head had hit (wrongo). Anyway, this pathway design sucks. Biking when you can't hear what's going on around you with headphones also sucks. I was lucky I wasn't hurt worse. If I'd been wearing a different helmet, even, I might not be here to write this. A temple isn't a great place to land on a huge metal bolt.
Ultimately, the fault lies with this awful design. It's a blind corner next to a hill with a switchback pathway. So coming out of the tunnel, you want to build a lot of speed to make it up the hill. People coming down the hill can be braking but also not SEE anyone else. I was lucky not to be hurt worse. It's been 18 days and I am still visibly bruised in multiple places and dealing with concussion effects.
@Vidyala that design reminds me of so many underpasses here in Sweden. Including new built ones!
(Outs are concrete, though)
@Gurre Sitting here wondering if I would've rather hit my head on concrete and I'm genuinely not sure. 😂 I'm sorry to hear the design is prevalent, though. It's not great.
@Vidyala whoa, so scary! glad you are on the mend and it wasn't worse! i hate it when people wear headphones 24/7, especially when doing dangerous things like that. i never wear them while biking or anything like that, and it's why i don't like them while snowboarding, too. i like to be able to hear my surroundings!
@Dr_Bombay He just kinda stood there, too. He didn't immediately take off, and he said "Are you okay?" but he also didn't move to help. It wasn't 'till Voss got to me that he helped get me out from under the bike. So weird to me, I feel like if it was me I'd have dropped my bike and scrambled to help? IDK.🤷‍♀️
@Vidyala i would have immediately tried to help, too! just standing there? weird. maybe he was worried about touching you without a 3rd person there to verify that he wasn't assaulting you or anything? i don't know. people are weird, but i can see how everyone's touchy about lawsuits and stuff nowadays.
@Vidyala 😳 that other cyclist was completely in the wrong to not be approaching the exit with the assumption that other people will be entering. 🤨 Yes, the pathway design is not bicycling friendly, but that requires extra responsibility from the cyclist, on approach to that tunnel entrance/exit. He should have been just as cautious as you were. He was not. He failed humanity.
@rooster_irl Yeah, he's not my favourite dude tbh. Voss said the guy rode by him and P3 too fast as well, just moments before this happened. Just going way too fast in the tunnel, no consideration for the safety of it. I wish it was like cars and I had his insurance/contact info haha
@Vidyala 😳🤨 Yup. He’s an a*hole.
@Vidyala Good grief, I’m so sorry. I hope you’re feelijg better and I’m glad it wasn’t worse. But the guy was in the wrong and I can’t believe he didn’t try to help you immediately.
