After a few months without a Twitter account, you start to not care at all about Elon Musk. You feel at home in that decentralised community where oligarchs are powerless.

Sure, there’s plenty of problems. But it’s not about fighting an evil powerful figure. It’s about discussing, taking small actions. Human stuff.

You didn’t win by fighting an unstoppable force. You simply walked away.

And then, it hits you.

What if we could to the same for everything else?

Like in @pluralistic’s novel.

@ploum I would do ... this is the plan

but for now I can't : my house owner still ask for €, as the state and the energy providers and the local shop for groceries
yes there is the g1/libre money project but 🤔
@pluralistic

@olm_e ...it is a walk away, not a jet flight, so you can take one step at a time.

We each have many attachments to capitalism that can be dropped. The money can be handled by a credit union instead of a bank. It's a step. The grocery store visits can be reduced by joining or starting a food buying club. If you look for it, you will probably find many small institutions of mutual aid to help your journey.

@ploum @pluralistic it would be so cool if we could realistically ignore the weight of these billionaire bastards on the rubber sheet of our social fabric

@ploum @pluralistic It was kinda neat when my login session cookies for Twitter all expired and I never bothered signing back in.

The site's just all kinds of broken now and not worth visiting, mostly just annoying when someone links there or tries embedding a tweet from there.

@ploum @pluralistic Zuck is the worst offender, but because he serves the left & establishment, people just focus on Elon.
@steve @ploum @pluralistic Plenty of focus on Mark Zuckerberg too. Lots of room in our hearts to despise both billionaire social media overlords.
@mastodonmigration @ploum @pluralistic I’m trying to find the multiple DOJ investigations, government fines and constant hit pieces in the media against Zuck, but can’t seem to find them. He’s definitely walking through the raindrops right now, at least compared to Elon.
@ploum @pluralistic God I wish I could do the same for everything else
Although having seen how some people act on fedi I'm not that convinced people wouldn't just murder each other over discourse
@ploum @pluralistic @dangillmor you aren’t selling it to me. Imo we should never stop worrying about plutocrats endangering our world, nor the masses of people left behind with our power to communicate with them.
@ploum @pluralistic it's easy to say this about the digital area. You don't like a place? Spin up your own.
But would what do tell the Ukrainians? Walking away will make everything absolutely worse for them and the world.
@ploum @pluralistic I still have, and regularly check, my Twitter account, but not being logged in to Twitter on my phone since the app last updated (X? What the hell is X?) has felt like vacation.

@ploum @pluralistic i'd love to do the same for youtube (setup a peertube instance) but i only have like 10mbps uplink AT BEST

so video streaming to more than like one person at once is not really an option

@ploum @lisamelton @pluralistic Yeah, the x-bird site was barely tolerable before the big baby asshole took it over. I don’t miss it.
