Fascinated while watching addresses by Presidents of countries at the UNSC open discussion on Ukraine. Just heard from President of Hungary. Now President of Slovenia.

(Note: Both Presidents happen to be Women. Isn’t it strange how Canada and the USA have still never had a woman elected leader? #Patriarchy)

@chris Kim Campbell was chosen as Prime Minister 1993 but did not get re-elected
@kimhoar she wasn't “elected*” as leader. She was an MP and gained a Cabinet position then took over for Mulroney after he resigned. Her party lost the next election in a landslide, including her losing her own seat, so my point stands. Canada has never elected a woman Prime Minister.
@chris In Canada you don’t “elect” a leader. The leader of the party with the most seats is the Prime Minister. The USA elects a leader. I agree that no party headed by a woman has ever won an election in Canada.
@kimhoar with respect. I know how our system works. My point stands. The people of Canada have never elected a party into government in Ottawa that had a woman as leader. I was using the term elected in a colloquial way. This isn't a controversial point. Kim Campbell was born in my hometown. It's too bad she got handed the cards she did. But she was not elected Prime Minister.
@chris @kimhoar You may be right about the Lady from Slovenia. But Katalin Novák is neither the leader of Fidesz nor the leader of Hungary. She's just Orbán's puppet.
@hettwolf @kimhoar I won't pretend to know the intricacies of realpolitik in Hungary, but she does have the title of President. :)

@kimhoar @chris
Yes, but I think the point is that electing a party is "like" electing a leader, while Campbell was never put through that general election process. She was chosen by the votes of her own party.

Really, the US system is more similar than not. Americans couldn't vote Bernie Sanders for President, because the Democrat party chose to put forth Joe Biden as their candidate instead.

Like the Canadian system is also a two-party system, as nobody but Liberal or Conservative will win.
