@violetsix @endali it's really good too! I've used it to get some ofu earlier projects going again on modern platforms.
Also helped port a lot of indie games to Linux natively by being a drop in :)
@endali BIG BIG “Ransom” energy there!
“You won’t see any of this two million dollars. Not one dime.”
@endali $100k once and $1k p.m. is not that much in the grand scheme of things, but it'll certainly be a clear signal and may allow more devs to maintain these ful-time.
Personally, I wished for a big studio to go: "Fuck #Unity we'll now donate the amount equal to the necessary #Unity license to @godotengine / @[email protected] / @defold / ... instead!
@endali This. THis is how you game industry.
And it made me go buy Terraria too. Can't say no to a $12 game when it supports a good community player.
@SammyGalen @endali Having access to the souce code is not the same as open source. You need Unreal's permission to use or even see the source code, and this among other things makes it incompatible with the open source model.
When I modify a piece of open source software I can publish those changes and the whole community benefits from it. On the other side if I use Unreal Engine and make changes that could benefit others I would keep them for myself. Because it would benefit Epic the most, and I don't want to help making Epic more rich and powerful while I don't receive a dime from them.
@liaizon
> XNA that has recently been discontinued
FYI, xna hasn't been supported for a decade! But Terraria is even older than that...
A while ago I read about the distinction between industry and business. Industry is about creating value, while business is about creating profit. Creating profit does not always require the creation of value, and can even work while destroying value. Businesses have learned that lesson a bit too wel over the past hapf century.
That's why the brightest minds are making the most money optimising ads and high-frequency stock trades. Neither create any value, but they create tons of profit.
Unity: We Are going to charge companies per download of a game made with our engine!
Everyone: Get fucked.
Re-Logic: We want you to get fucked so hard we are paying OTHER COMPANIES to fuck you over.
@endali 100k each AND a 1000$ a month sponsor?
DAMN, talk about supporting the community
@endali love the Terraria Devs. Eternally promising not to update terraria yet still delivering.
I want to play it again
@endali Feels a bit virtual signaly to me. It's a nice win for the projects but the prose is melodramatic.
I think Unity will figure it out in time, they've already walked it back. This industry is infamously a powder keg on a short fuse.
they walked it back, apologizing for "the confusion" instead of focusing on the breach of trust and asinine approach to licensing they presented which means they'll either be forced to abandon this idea completely or die (or at least hurt significantly, as they already are) on that hill, I think.
we don't really owe large companies like these leniency and understanding - if this is truly a mistake (I doubt it) a decision this impactful should've been researched more
