Call me a cynical old lady but when a prime minister whose family seems rather heavily invested in oil wants to delay an end to ICE car sales then maybe we should be suspicious of his motives. Seriously though, when you’re a car manufacturer making mega size strategic investments in new EV models, how are you supposed to deal with a country flip-flopping its policies like a tent flap in a force 9 gale? The only way humanity survives this is by ignoring the questionable motives of its leaders.
Rishi can have all the policies he likes but if the few remaining British car manufacturers can’t see a market beyond these shores for stinky old petrol cars beyond 2030 then they’re not going to push them simply for the domestic market. And the cars we import will be what Ford, Volkswagen-Audi, Stellantis and the Chinese want to make after already investing in a complete upending of manufacturing. As a country we risk becoming the quaint laggard as everyone else moves on at speed.
@christineburns I don't think Sunak even cares about what remains of the British car industry (which is already moving towards EVs); he is pandering to those who want to keep their old petrol/diesel cars running as long as possible, and avoiding the necessity to spend public money on charging infrastructure (lots more people would drive EV's if the charging infrastructure was present, particularly street level chargers linked to existing lighting infrastructure)
@christineburns sadly car manufacturers will just donate more to said questionable leaders, in order to do whatever they want.
