Hey #YEGbike women and non-binary people planning to participate in the #FancyWomenBikeRide in Edmonton this Sunday: this is the current Environment Canada forecast for the day-of! đŸ„łđŸ„łđŸ„ł

It’s a lot of days yet and it could still go wrong, but wouldn’t that be sweeeeeet? I bet we’d see a whole lot more of the fancy dresses that the other cities get to wear.

Update: the #FancyWomenBikeRide #FWBRyeg is TOMORROW and this is the current forecast! Hot damn. It’s fancy dress time! đŸ„łđŸšŽâ€â™€ïž

Sadly I’m a bit too chubby right now for the dress I’d ideally have wanted to wear. 😱 But I have an alternative that should be almost as awesome. See you all soon!

Some excerpts from the email sent out to those signed up:

12:30pm: We'll gather at City Hall.
‱Councillor Ashley Salvador will share an update on the $100M Bike Network project.
‱We'll take a group photo glamour shot.
~1pm: we'll ride a circuit around Churchill Square, with our littlest, youngest riders and any cargobikes leading, ringing our bells all the way. /1

#FancyWomenBikeRide #FWBRyeg

This is a slow roll. The point is to have fun, and to be visible, to be seen, to remind the city that women want safe, pleasant, welcoming infrastructure so that we can engage with our urban space, and comfortably use our bicycles to run errands, attend the symphony or go out for dinner, go on a ride with kids or lovers, or just commute to school or work, year-round. We also want to show our neighbours that good bike infrastructure brings beautiful things to the neighbourhood. /2

#FWBRyeg

The route: we'll set off on the 102Ave bike lane and wend our way slowly through downtown, then cross the High Level bridge on the west side. After we climb the hill to the Garneau Lamp, we'll rest (It's all downhill after this). We'll head along Saskatchewan Drive to 106 St, and the fun Trolley Track. From there we'll ride through Old Strathcona towards the Bonnie Doon bridge, pass by Faculté St-Jean, and end the ride at Café Bicyclette. It's just over 8km. /3

Fancy Women Bike Ride 2023 (Edmonton)

FANCY. FIERCE. FUN. You are invited to join the Edmonton Fancy Women Bike Ride on Sunday Sept 17, 2023.

Update: The decidedly unwelcome #smoke is SUPER harshing my vibe today (of COURSE the first year it's actually warm enough, Edmonton's #FancyWomenBikeRide gets #SmokedOut, grr), but as you all well know, I've got a #MaskArt mask for that (for the benefit of anyone who's ever wanted to see one of them on someone's face rather than just on the counter!).

See those of you this level of smoke doesn't mess with too badly!

@IPEdmonton

I hope that if it goes ahead, everyone is masked well, fancy or otherwise!

And also: that everyone has a great time. 🙂

@IPEdmonton The length is manageable but you then have to get back home (no longer in a protective mass) or to transit to get home. For me, it’s not going to be manageable. If the valley line LRT were open, that would be different. We may or may not come for a the first part and peel off before the High Level Bridge. It was super fun last year, and I was looking forward to it, but the ending spot is disappointing to me.
@KatyMackay I understand. I do think you should come for the first part because that should still be really fun, and you'll get a taste at least!
@IPEdmonton the only way around it that I have thought of is if we drive in two cars to Cafe Bicyclette, leave one car there, then drive home in the other one, then take the LRT with our bikes to the starting point downtown. And that’s an awful lot of driving for a bike ride!

@KatyMackay It is! (But it might be worth it?)

Also, Café Bicyclette has a GREAT patio...

@KatyMackay Another possibility: if it doesn't add too much length, this is also in the email (I'm planning to do this). You could then transit from Churchill.
"While the 'official' part of the ride ends at Café Bicyclette, for any who want to return to Churchill Square, after our rest we will ride down the beautiful Mill Creek Ravine, cross the river on the Tawatinù bridge (perfect for photos!) and use the elevator and funicular to get back up to downtown."
