Is Destiny 2 worth starting as a new player in 2023? - Lemmy.world

I’m on PS5 and I’ve been curious if this game is worth starting up for the first time. I’m playing FFXIV right now but after Sony acquired Bungie I’ve been curious.

No, all the content is just pieced out into different chunks that all cost $20+, and after a year they will take it away through their “sunset” process and then make you pay another $60 for all the new shit. Fuck that game
Last I heard they are stopping with expansion sunsetting, no? Seasonal stories still go away though…
Same difference to me
Fair. FOMO is great to keep you in - but as soon as you fall out, it juat makes it progressivly more difficult to get back.

Sure; they’ve been making the old stories major plot points accessible again recently/trying to work on the “scale and scope” problem.

You can typically get the old expansions in a cheaper catch up “legendary edition” which goes on sale during the major sales (at least that’s how it works on steam and worked on stadia).

I’d try the free portion of the game out, and if you like it, pick up the latest expansion, and then when there’s a sale pickup the “legendary edition” and play through the old content.

Things will feel a bit off, but it’ll basically be like watching a movie and then when you get the legendary edition you can go back and go through the prequels.

if you just want to run around and shoot stuff it’s ok, but don’t expect any coherent plot or real character progression. it’s something I play for a few weeks every now and then… then drop it for a few months.

I mean it’s F2P, if you’re just looking to waste time and not have an epic adventure, it s fine.

I think it depends. I have too many hours in the game so I feel confident in saying that it is worthwhile. However, I believe there are a lot of factors to consider. Below are my thoughts, apologies as I typed a lot. If you also want me to elaborate more on certain issues/facets of the game, just let me know (:

1). The game is expensive. Knowing which expansions to get without any sort of help will likely be a headache. To remedy that, you’ll want to look for the Destiny 2: Legacy Collection. It gives you the major expansions of Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and The Witch Queen. The order I have them listed is the canonical order in which they occurred in game. We’re in the expansion of Lightfall (this comes after The Witch Queen). I would suggest avoiding it until you’ve played the previous expansions.

2). The game heavily relies on veterans to teach New Lights. The new player experience has gotten better but it’s still far from good. A lot of info will be like mush to you without some sort of guide. Armor stats, ability cooldowns, build crafting, general gameplay.

3). Another person in this thread mentioned the process of “sunsetting”. This was a former action done by Bungie that has since been done away with. You won’t be affected by this in the same way veteran players were, however, the overarching story will be lost on you without looking at videos unfortunately. Bungie is working on ways to give newer/returning players more context that they’re currently missing. My Name is Byf or Myelin Games can give you the story run down plus extra lore.

As someone who has played a LOT of Destiny, I would not recommend the game to anyone. I do think the core gameplay is very good, but it’s easy (maybe just me) to get trapped in a very FOMO line of thinking. I would follow every update, get on everyday just to grind out daily, weekly shit and not necessarily for fun. There are much better or healthier games out there to spend your time with, games that actually respect your time.
I always tell people: “Destiny 2 is my favorite game. You shouldn’t play it.”
Me and league of legends. A game I love and will always play but always tell people I don’t recommend it unless they’re already familiar with and like mobas and are willing to spend 1k hours just learning it.
I escaped DOTA 2. I won’t go back!

I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have someone to help walk you through what to do in the game. Destiny is notoriously unfriendly to new players, even after the efforts they’ve made recently to help onboard new players better.

We in this community would be happy to help guide you but I think it’s important to know that it’s an uphill battle.

Play through the free content and see if you like playing the game. Then come back and ask if you should buy any expansions or not.

You could also just wait till The Final Shape releases in February. The expansion is looking to wrap up the major storyline and kind of act as a soft reset of Destiny 2 before they move to a new content release model.

Probably the best comment here. You can feel it out without investing anything beyond time. Not much to lose!
It’s a great (the best?) looter-shooter. You can invest a lot of time if you’d like, or just kind of skim. The gun-play is incredible, both design and the sound direction contribute to make every one feel unique.

I started a couple months ago

its fun with my friends but I probably wouldn’t spend much time by myself in it. You can get pretty far without buying anything and I would suggest that even if you play with your friends. It’s pretty and the game will give you a intro that I thought was helpful
