Ha, it is almost 5 months to the day that I finished the #cdrama #LighterAndPrincess. There was a YouTube recommendation for me this morning with a key scene from the series, and I realized I missed those messy humans.

This first episode... now that I know the back story, I better understand what they are trying to show.

Zhu Yun flies first class back to Shanghai from the US with a friend, is greeted at the airport by her parents, and brought home to have a big meal.

Li Xun is released from prison to no fanfare or family, and bunks with a friend in a questionable halfway house where they have instant noodles with a kettle that doesn't boil water.

Oh, I didn't notice before that Li Xun created his own alarm that is a pig with a bell so that he knows to go see Zhu Yun's performance!

Fer cute.

I think when she did her stand-up routine about the golden retriever, he might have been serious about dating her in public then. But her insistence that he was a "guest performer" hurt his feelings and that's why he continued to be a jerk? 🤔

Lao Gao just gets set up to fail everywhere he goes. He has a touch too much pride in being recognized as the best and constantly being compared to a once-in-a-lifetime genius like Li Xun would turn anyone to the dark side. If Li Xun wasn't in the picture, Lao Gao would probably be top of the class in a normal bell curve.

And Zhu Yun, being blinded by revenge, doesn't recognize how she is stabbing Lao Gao in the heart.

Gah, I don't want to look. 🫣

The reality of this, too, is that these are supposed to be college freshmen. I know China educates their kids to higher standards than the US, but these are barely kids. The error-proof perfection of architecture, design, and implementation is a pipe dream and unattainable by pretty much every person on the planet. To think that college freshmen would or even should be held to that kind of standard that Li Xun expects is cruel.

🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈
I don't want to watch Li Xun's sister die again. 💔😭😭😭

But I kinda do want to see that cheating asshole get smacked again. 😡

😭😭😭😭😭
He knows how to hurt her so much.

I'm just thinking about how Prof. Lin was pleading quietly that Li Xun never spoil himself again. There is SO MUCH love and care and fear and sadness in that tiny interaction. He thinks so highly of Li Xun's abilities and recognizes how he just threw everything good in his life away in order to punch that dude in the face.

I think it was also where Li Xun understands that he is not alone in this world. That even with the loss of his sister, there are still people in the world who know him and care very much about him.

"I promise you. I will never destroy myself again."

😭😭😭😭😭

Zhu Yun took way too much responsibility onto herself for Li Xun's destructive decisions. He drove her away so hard.

And she was so so scared he was close to repeating a violent act. So so scared of him losing all the good he has again.

She is just too good for him.

OK. I finished episode 35. There is only one episode left, but I've seen the whole series already. I think I mostly wanted the build-up for when Li Xun finally admits to Zhu Yun that he has liked her for a very long time and wants to be with her again.

The first watch through, I remember it being very tense with this "Zhu Yun possibly dating Lao Gao" plot. Her hitting "Post" was just so unexpected (and also perfect). But it felt like hardly a blip on this second pass.

My favorite part is how he doesn't wash the shirt she slept in. And when she throws it at him and he smells it. That is just ... so real. A lover's scent just hits different.

I also love when Hou Ning comes back sheepishly after Zhu Yun brings him to his new room. When he asks Li Xun, "How is Zhu Yun's cooking?" "Horrible." "Well, at least she has one detractor."

Because Zhu Yun is too perfect. I still love her anyway.
