Some have given up on masking as they think there's no point if masks can't singlehandedly eradicate a virus (a right wing talking point). What they're missing is that higher risk people can't even get healthcare due to a lack of masking. Masks make essential spaces accessible.
SARS‑CoV‑2 is highly transmissible and we don't have a sterilizing vaccine. People can't mask 24/7, so it's unfair to expect masks alone to contain that spread everywhere. But masks can help contain spread in specific spaces like healthcare settings. That makes masks worth it.
Every space where a majority of people mask makes that space more accessible to everyone, especially higher risk people. Everyone has the right to access essential spaces like healthcare and public transport safely, even if #COVID is spreading elsewhere.
While wearing a high quality mask like an N95 helps give people protection at an individual level, masks are far more effective when everyone wears one, because no tool is perfect, and viral load matters: the less of the virus that's in the air, the more safe it is for everyone.
We need to stop the all-or-nothing approach to public health. Wearing a mask sometimes is better than never wearing a mask. Some people wearing a mask is better than no one wearing a mask. Wearing any kind of mask is better than not wearing a mask at all. Every bit matters.
TLDR; Wearing a mask won't alone eradicate #COVID but the more you do it, the more spaces you help make accessible to everyone, especially higher risk people. We can't accept excluding people from society indefinitely. Even if you only do it sometimes, wearing a mask is worth it.
MackajI don't think anyone masks in the UK any more, or at least it's very rare. No one talks about COVID in every day life either as it's mostly disappeared here. Very occasionally I'll hear about someone who's picked it up, but I don't know anyone personally who's had it for a long time now.
It'll take a new variant generating a noticeable increase in hospital admissions to get the attention of national newspapers and change people's behaviours again.

é.@mackaj @luckytran meeting anecdote with anecdote, I know several people who have had it in the past month. And I know many (!) people who are still masking or who simply go out much less and mask when they do because the effects of getting sick with covid would be so bad for them because of pre-existing conditions.
I'm not passing judgement on mask wearing. It's very effective as part of a multi-layered approach to protection (masks, sanitation and distancing) I was making an observation as to how people are affected and behaving in the UK. You're in Ireland yes?
I've just been out for 2 hours — car wash, pet shop, B&Q and Tesco — didn't spot a mask even once.
People here just aren't thinking about Covid at the moment.
@mackaj @luckytran yes, I understood that. Was only commenting on seeing and knowing people who are still masking and who have had it. I am in Ireland, but the folks I'm talking about are in England.
@mackaj I think it's similar here, very very few people wear a mask. And yet here too I know more than five people who have had it in the last few weeks. No correction is implied, just data

wb x64@luckytran I'm definitely in favor of this messaging because implying that I'm a queerphobic genocider for ... (checks) staying in my house all week but going inside a grocery store unmasked in an area with low transmission and good hospitalization stats ... is just not winning any converts.
I absolutely mask on airplanes etc though, and recently started taking my mask more places since numbers are up and things seem worse this time. But if I get sick, *I'm already isolating for 72hrs anyway.*

The last time that Newsom implemented a mask mandate, very few people and businesses even enforced it. I remember calling the local health department and they said the mandate was based on “good faith”
