Amanda was the Minister for a department that first "deported" a mentally ill Australian citizen to live a life of neglect and poverty in the Philippines, then learnt of its error and did nothing.

The Federal Opposition has called for the former and present Immigration Ministers, Philip Ruddock and Amanda Vanstone, to step aside after a scathing report on the illegal deportation of the Australian citizen Vivian Alvarez Solon. Former Victorian police commissioner Neil Comrie found the handling of Ms Alvarez's case "catastrophic".
