PSA copypasted from tumblr, pls boost  :

FEMA is doing an emergency alert test on all TVs, radios, and cell phones on October 4, 2023, at approximately 2:20pm ET.

If you live in the US and you have a phone you need to keep secret for any reason, make sure that it is turned off at this time.

Yes, I'm doing this months in advance, and yes, my blog has very little reach, but I figure better to post about it more than less.

Please reblog and add better tags than mine, I'm bad at tags.

@almaember @trixter can I add here that anyone with #LQTS, specifically LQTS Type 2, needs to prepare to be somewhere safe when this goes off, preferably with someone else.

(Dangerous heart rythmns can be triggered by loud noises with LQTS)

(I have LQTS).

god this spread
anyway
gonna edit it so everyone gets it again pls don't be mad at me
okay can't edit it because pinafore but i will sometime

@dumbo thanks

I linked it in a reply, did it not show up?

@dumbo @almaember THANK YOU for posting ACTUAL SOURCES; I'd been seeing this copy-pasta for two days but NOBODY had a link... and since AI ruined Google and friends, I couldn't find it AT ALL...

@almaember

Yup:
"WASHINGTON -- FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) this fall.

The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 4."

@almaember This is extremely helpful, thank you.

@almaember thx for the info.

A lot of people will appreciate having their #EmergencyPhone or #HiddenPhone not being unvocered due to #CellBroadcast...

Not that my recommendation is to have a switched-off " #BurnerPhone " with removed battery, replacement battery, charger , SIM cards (yes, plural!) all zipped up if not vacuum-bagged and hidden somewhere safe if need be, but it's good to have a precise info for when to take those offline.

Also thx for the source link:

@almaember whoops, and now I see several others already posted this in the comments, ah well
@almaember I recommended having it switched off for at least a day or two before and after if you can, emergency broadcast tests in the UK had complications (this is a test after all) that caused some phones to alert during that extra period

@almaember did they really pick 10/4 lol. 10-4 good buddy

(thank you!!)

@almaember To make certain the phone is powered off, one should remove the battery if the phone has a removable battery. โ€œpowered downโ€ is not necessarily completely off on all electronic devices. Notice how the battery charge indicator can can display immediately on some devices when plugged in, even if theyโ€™re โ€œpowered down?โ€

TV manuals are better about calling it standby, waiting for the remote signal to turn back on, but a TV in this mode should relay the EAS - by design.

@almaember if it's the same type of test we had in the UK recently, you can turn off these emergency alerts on your Android/iPhone device. I did this on mine and it didn't go off.
@almaember

Am I wrong to think if you have a phone to hide, not from the government, not from hackers, but from someone who might hear it near you that there's a good chance you're a POS.

Don't get me wrong, if your work doesn't allow phones, fuck them.

But I'm stuggling to see how likely it is that anyone that isn't cheating would be worried about a phone being found by it's ring tone.

My top innocent people are:

1. Workers not "allowed" to have phone (fuck that)
2. Sheltered juveniles not allowed to have a phone
3. People secretly living in a billionaires guest room

Drawing a blank on anything else.

Still, feel kinda privaledged with this info so TY

@normalnova have you heard of abusive relationships? abusive families? queer kids in hateful family?

you wrote up that entire comment and couldn't realise that?

if you're that ignorant please don't get in my mentions
