No one wants to talk about this because it all worked out due to #Phish being an incredible band and Derek being one of the best guitarists on the planet, but I wouldn’t be upset if Jack Smith filed charges over not playing an Allmans or Dominos tune last night.
@chopaganda Golden Age is a Tier 5 song for that pairing but they made it great. If they had played Blue Sky, I would have melted.
@Rosey It’s like Derek said just play what you were going to play anyway, and I’ll fit right in.
@chopaganda @Rosey hitting the unison part in first tube was pretty pretty nice
@mrcompletely @chopaganda @Rosey That was a real “stop what you’re doing” moment. Would love to hear that sound again on Tweezer, Gin, Simple, etc
@kev @mrcompletely @chopaganda exactly why I wanted Blue Sky
@Rosey That would’ve been an amazing pick
@kev @mrcompletely @chopaganda There seems to be some sort of internal yam-band force of resistance to covering songs written and *sung* by Dickey Betts. I cannot for the life of me explain it. Isbell does a good Lizzy Reed and lots of bands jam on Jessica, but those are instrumentals.
@Rosey Interesting observation. I’m seeing some Ramblin Man covers but that’s about it
@chopaganda @Rosey That’s exactly what it sounded like. It’s crazy how much he brought to some of those songs, like the back half of Everything’s Right, but it’s still kinda maddening wondering why they didn’t deviate and let the man rip some Allmans or just some 1.0 classics
@Rosey @chopaganda Derek did everything but sing it that second time he played the tease
@Rosey @chopaganda I think Derek kind of did
@brianshaw @chopaganda Derek barely talks, nevermind sings. My brother was there last night and he has seen Derek since we both saw him sit in with ABB in 92, lots of Derek Trucks Band shows before Susan, and TTB. He said it was as animated as he’s ever seen Derek onstage, facing off with Big Red.
@brianshaw @chopaganda Derek smiled. That’s huge stage presence for him.
