Because it seems to be working for TikTok. Peopleās attention spans are getting shorter and these short videos, each a couple of seconds long, are a money printer, as Google can put even more ads in between even less content.

It is annoying that the youtube algorithm give higher priority to longer videos, above 10 min or so. Which means that quite a few content creators will stretch out something that would take 3 min to explain into a 10+ min video.
Yeah I agree. Thatās why it feels like most videos in that range donāt usually have any reason to watch. You just know itās going to be a waste of time.
I find itās unfair to associate attention span with the usefulness of Shorts. There are jokes and joke formats that donāt work when part of a longer video. The primary value of Shorts is in communicating something relatively unimportant, but itās okay to consume media purely for enjoyment.
What pisses me off is that they just assume that everyone who wants to watch videos also wants to watch shorts. There's no native way to block or filter them completely. That's also an aspect where YT got so much worse. Like you can't use quotation marks to explicitly search terms anymore. It just suggests you random garbage that is irrelevant to what you want, which is often burried far below all the other garbage search results. I don't even know why you'd remove a feature like that. It's such an unnecessary dumbing down, because people unaware won't use it anyway, as it is completely invisible to them. YT just goes further down the shitter with each year.
Use the Revanced app on android and you can remove these
I do use newpipe, had to fire up the YouTube app for Chromecasting to a TV and was greeted by this.
Revamped supports Chromecast as well.
Newpipe is a website scrapper. It is fully open source as well. It does not have Chromecast support.
Revanced is a patcher for the official YouTube app, which is why it has chromecast support
Then why does anyone use Newpipe?
Because some people like using FOSS apps. And donāt want all the trackers from the YouTube app.
BeezKnutsLook into smarttubenext for Chromecast then. It takes like 30 seconds to install. Itās similar to new pipe. I believe it can even link with new pipe to download videos for offline use.
Itās the entire reason I bought a Chromecast over a Roku or fire TV.

Iām not turning off my ad blocker to use YouTube. When that happens, I just wonāt use YouTube anymore. Iāve stopped using lots of sites/services over the years for one reason or another. Itāll just get thrown on the pile.

Itās extremely important to exercise your voice when dealing with bullshit like what YouTube is doing, and it saddens me to see so many people complain about YT / Netflix / whoever else walking all over them, while folding like wet paper and handing over their money.
I understand that people with families canāt just tell their kids why they canāt enjoy the same shows their friends doā¦ But even some of my single friends who pirate some things will still happily bend over for, say, Disney+.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for sticking to your guns and actually treating YT like the pile of garbage itās becoming. Iāll be right there with you if the ads become unavoidable, even if abandoning it is an extremely difficult long-term exercise. I left reddit in the rearview and YT will be no different.
I don't know if their block will work in private mode of the browser. If it doesn't, then all youtube videos will simply be opened in private mode and that's that. If somehow that doesn't work, then I too will stop with youtube.
Unfortunately, we'll probably be the minority and others will just give in to the pressure.

Partly for the inane TikTok apeing content, partly because of vertical video and primarily because I make 45-60 second videos for clients and they want them on YouTube - where they become Shorts, no matter what I do (other than add enough empty video at the end to take them past 61 seconds). Itās infuriating.

Oh yeah I was only posting dumb comments for content for lemmy. The issue is definitely because YouTube is pushing them front and center on the home screen of the app.

I justā¦ isnāt just letting a single long video play the same thing? Because the way I see it when people doomscroll shorts, theyāre not actively watching the content either. And whether you ignore video X or shorts A, B, C and D doesnāt make a difference, no? Itās like leaving the TV on, itās just background noise to turn the brain off to.
I just donāt get the point. Why not watch full length videos where you can have context and actually learn something? Shorts canāt really provide context so are just funny moments or something that arenāt really that interesting, just a waste of time.
Listen, I'm a busy guy with a life. I don't have 20 minutes to dedicate to a video. I'd rather watch a few shorts... a quick 5 10 30 45 minute session is all I'm after...
I honestly only watch them when Iām super bored or high in bed when I want quick laughs. But honestly, the same question can be asked of people who scroll on Facebook, lemmy, or Reddit hours on end
I would agree with Facebook (and Iāll admit Iām biased), but Lemmy/Reddit are about conversations, and context/information are important. Shorts/tiktok are about quick things that catch your eye and you forget about seconds later, and they canāt inform you on much, if anything.
