I’m late to the party but congratulations to the Indian Space Agency for being the fourth country to land on the moon.

The trip cost $75 million which is cheaper than a bunch of Hollywood movies about going to space including Gravity & Interstellar.

The space race is back.

Chandrayaan-3 budget: India just landed on the Moon for less than it cost to make Interstellar

Some houses cost less than Indian space agency spent on getting to the Moon

@carnage4life

And their Mars mission cost $74 million bucks. Not a typo!

And look at the scientists in their mission control room. Just look at it!

We can have space without space billionaires.

Putting all our eggs in the Elon basket is a choice, and not a good one.

@mekkaokereke @carnage4life Eeyupp.
I mean $74M does barely pay 2,5 Proton rockets, so it's not as if that's much considering one is needed alone for that thing and scientific missions never get the scalability bonuses of commercial aerospace like most satellite providers.

Speaking of Satellite Providers:
#Iridium replaced their aging fleet in 2019 at a cost of $2,8B and those were just 77 in-orbit + 9 ground spares that were sent to space literally in 6-packs and that covers the entire globe.

@kkarhan @mekkaokereke @carnage4life This is why I *really* don't get the fanboi squeeing over #Starlink. It's literally the worst possible way to do telecoms via satellite, and is downright dangerous.

@Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life Also to achieve the [compareably low] latencies and high speeds, he literally needed to litter the low earth orbits with a shitton of satellites so low orbited that they'll need to be replaced constantly due to Exosperic drag making them re-enter...

It would've been more reasonsable to lay down fiber links across Antarctica between research stations or upgrading Iriidum instead, but that would've been easy and boring.

@Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life
But like the #Hyperloop #scam being pushed to defund and cockblock #CaliforniaHighSpeedRail / #CHSR his plans aim to undercut overdue and long-term unavoidable #FTTB & #FTTH installations as only longterm feasible solution because we already do come close to the theoretical limitso of physics in terms of what can be done in the #RF #spectrum given earth's atmospheric composition and the narrow "Radio Window" into space...

@Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life
Which is why #LiFi is being researched and why #esa and others literally do the closest they can do to fiberoptics in space: Actively-tracked optical links and bridges between satellites...

In short: unless it's a constantly moving vehicle or vessel that has to operate far away from any permanent settlement or shores, there's hardly any need that justifies #SATCOM amidst the high cost, high latency and low bandwiths.

@Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life Espechally when the #tech used isn't even something #SpaceX invented: Their phased-array designs and active tracking tech is based upon @DLR 's #SANTANA2 project.

To grossly oversimplify: It's like an array of 3-axis active tracking dishes, but microscopic and without actually moving parts...

And for the network itself they just repurposed #DOCSIS but with multiple endpoints and made the handshake faster to allow smooth handover.

Nothing Groundbreaking...

@kkarhan @mekkaokereke @carnage4life @DLR Back in the early 2000s, I worked for a cable TV company starting to play with broadband... I remember DOCSIS from all the way back then. Grounding breaking big-brain disruptor stuff right there, Elon.

@Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life @DLR

OFC #Starlink just took the tech stack that all the other #Providers used...

Personally, I wished @BNetzA would enforce #SATCOM providers to not illegally bundle tariffs with devices as per §73 TKG...

https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/tkg_2021/__73.html

Because the lack of enforced standardization turns a lot of #SatelliteInternet equipment into expensive and bulky paperweights for no good reason.
https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/tkg_2021/__74.html

§ 73 TKG - Einzelnorm

@Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life @BNetzA

For Example one cannot get the #DataFlatrate on any other Device than the #IridiumGO but that's excluded from the network-internal flatrate option, forcing customers to have two devices and subscriptions instead of one.

Not shure if anyone ever complained via #CustomerProtection agencies like @verbraucherzentrale ...

@Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life @BNetzA @verbraucherzentrale

After all, #fees for #eSIM - changes have been banned by a court, as those are disadvantaging customers in an unexpectable way [compared to SIM cards]...

@kkarhan @Syulang @mekkaokereke @carnage4life @DLR Well.. we are doing frugal missions not because we want to but because we have to. Contrary to the propaganda of our fascist government, we are still poor and there isn't enough for food and health care, forget space missions. ISRO is demanding more funds and government is likely to oblige by cutting down on welfare schemes. There is also talk about involving private firms. I also heard ISRO has plans to industrialize Helium-3 extraction from moon. So, we will be walking the path that NASA and SpaceX has laid.
@kkarhan @DLR @Syulang @carnage4life @mekkaokereke Now, there is a new expectation from ISRO. A leader of a fascist extremist organisation, Hindu Mahasabha has demanded that India declare Moon as a Hindu nation before Jihadists take over. Ten years ago I would dismiss it as stupid blabber but now we all have to be worried. The Prime Minister, his entire cabinet and a huge chunk of elected representatives in the parliament have links to this organisation.
