This is a brilliant, even if utterly grim, essay. The takeaway should be that we’re all in this together: any “prepper” fantasy you have about how you’re gonna ride out climate change or societal mayhem is just that. We either survive together, or you die alone.

@Dhmspector dude, great piece. I’m playing Horizon Forbidden West which is a gorgeously flawed masterpiece centered in a post climate collapse framing and again and again the selfish indulge this escape because they’ve managed to hide the interdependence that their lives run on. Absent it, the bunker becomes a fresh type of hell.
@sgharms not a gamer myself any more, but watched my son work his way through Forbidden West earlier this year. What a great game — and, as you point out, really seems to be highlighting both the fatal flaw of techno-solutionism and the bottomless greed of those implementing it who think that they exist outside the biosphere/ecosystem that they evolved from.
