I was reading a wiki on methods to spot counterfeit games yesterday. For each method of detection that was no longer effective, the wiki noted that the counterfeiters had "cottoned on"

I had never encountered that in writing before and assumed it must be an eggcorn of "caught on"! I'm reading that it used to mean "to become friendly with" so maybe the meaning of these similar sounding phrases converged over time. Interesting! I learned something new.
