Big Journalism and its hangers-on still believe Twitter (now called X by its sociopath owner) is where they have to be. And as he launches insult after insult to the press and what it does, they just stay there and support him. Today's case in point:

It's clearly a combination of cowardice and calculation on the part of news orgs and the people who run them. Journalistic integrity doesn't even begin to factor into it. Which is sad, if not pathetic.

Elon Musk plans to remove headlines from news articles shared on X

Tweets containing news article links will be stripped of headlines and other metadata (like this very sentence). Instead, X, formerly Twitter, plans to display only an image and a URL.

@dangillmor "Journalistic integrity" is a concept created by business owners a few generations ago to keep newspaper staff in line. It was then adapted for use by magazines and TV. I was taught it at Medill in 1977-78.

It's not a rule. It's a choice. It can be a pie crust promise. And it doesn't apply at all to publishers.

@dangillmor Boy, it's getting harder and harder not to think that Musk is deliberately trying to destroy the platform.

@cepaea @dangillmor

If you look at his actions through the fascist paradigm, it makes sense. Fascism rejects modernity (the Enlightenment), so it's inherently irrational.

They also have a deeply authoritarian worldview, and that worldview is itself authoritarian. So, they attempt to live as though their worldview is true despite the contradictions of reality.

@dangillmor @MattFerrel

In fairness, twitter is the ideal vehicle for Maggie The Plumber Haberman to reveal her latest insights into the contents of Trump’s toilette

@dangillmor That’s where they got their traction and, for some, fame, for free and a huge reach. It’s hard to beat that. Saying that, it’s beyond me what the real trigger will be for governments to finally leave. Seems they turn a blind eye to everything #Musk has done.
@dangillmor isn’t part of the problem that the tools like #SocialNewsDesk and the innards of their CMSes need to have Mastodon support implemented?
@cell911 That would help, for sure.
@dangillmor If he can alter a headline it is only a matter of time before content is edited. And it will be far less than a year.
@dangillmor I see this as a belated acknowledgement by Musk that a sizeable proportion of his fanbase is functionally illiterate.

@dangillmor
It's an effect of capitalism. Capitalism is about centralizing money and power (to allegedly improve production.) The mindset is centralization, and news media is centralized there.

FOSS (Free & Open Source Software), like Mastodon, is decentralized in nature, and it seems to confuse business types.

@dangillmor Supporting our network we built and fighting for more control of that is not necessarily supporting Musk.
