What a slippery slope our environmental degradation is.

Are we going to normalize having to have personal air purifiers in our homes (for those who can afford them) and let polluters keep polluting, rather than clean up the air for everyone?

@petergleick Air purifiers are externalities dumped on us by the corporations. They should be taxed and we should be subsidized for it. Instead fossil fuel subsidies have risen the highest in history globally

@petergleick

When I tried to suggest limiting cars in the city during the apocalyptic air quality days over on the birdsite, I was met with abuse because such a suggestion would only come from a fascist libtard and that I should just wear a mask because I believe in them.

So sadly, if we let the right wing decide, the answer to your question is yes.

The left needs to get its act together.

@petergleick Considers American history and culture... Hm, yeah, that's probably a yes πŸ˜•

@petergleick Mainstream media and the corporate polluters would sure like us to.

Capitalism defines it this way. If we somehow get through this and survive, corporations will get the credit for their "green initiatives".

Putting aside the destruction of humanity for a moment... if we don't get through this, then shame on the public for not doing enough.

@petergleick I'm all for cleaning up the air, but IDK what you do about wildfires. We're going to be stuck with those for a long time.

Worldwide health is taking a lot of hits (now and in the years to come).

It is heartbreaking... It is going to take science to cultivate hardier plants that can live on less water, withstand harsher weather swings, grow faster, & suck up more carbon and output more oxygen per plant... Doable but it will take time to create those!
@petergleick if they can charge for air, hey, that’s just how #capitalism is designed to work.
@petergleick
Oh yes! And personalized air conditioning (for those who can afford it) while the Big Private Sector causes global temperatures to rise. 'Cos, you know, Capitalism...
