It's only a podcast if you can subscribe to it using RSS and play back with an application of your choice, otherwise it's just sparkling audio.
@airadam @aleen I think that’s actually true (well, at least the first bit). Stuff like Spotify-exclusive shows are not podcasts.
@michaelgemar @aleen They aren't, which also folds into the second point - if I'm tied to a specific program to play it back, it's not using an open standard, and therefore can't be a podcast. I've been through a few different podcatcher over the years, and if my current one stops being supported...I'll just get another and re-subscribe to everything! 🙂

@airadam on Mastodon, most things are just RSS feed - add `.rss` to theirs URL's end.

thus, anyone who is posting audio-clips here are automatically podcasters 😏

@airadam I have a podcast. It’s on about 3 dozen different platforms I think. (I lost count.)
But does it really matter? RSS feed can be down to the individual or the myriad of platform options.

Dark Matter Zine
@DarkMatterZine @bookstodon I genuinely think it does. By all means, if someone just want to put out an audio programme that is tied to a proprietary platform or something then they can, but "podcast" has a specific meaning and that meaning includes allowing openness of subscription/listening client. A Spotify-exclusive show, for example, is *not* that - and that's ok, but be clear!
@airadam @bookstodon I don’t really get the logic but also I think tying content to a single platform is silly unless that platform is giving you a ton of money to make it worth your while.

@DarkMatterZine @airadam @bookstodon

Sorry, can you explain what you aren't getting? It sounds like you are looking at this from a comparison of audio distribution models POV?

I think the OP was focused on protecting the word "podcast" as a distinct social and business value it provides by the nature of being a podcast, which is a distribution model and an ethos

Thanks to the iPod et al, we now have an easy & accessible experience of offline audio freedom inherent to podcasts by definition

@quaid @airadam @bookstodon Seems to me that “podcast” is the new iteration of a radio show. It can be anything so type/content is irrelevant. It’s now 1s and 0s available online that - depending on drm etc - can be downloaded.
@quaid @airadam @bookstodon Merriam webster defines a podcast as “a a program (as of music or talk) made available in digital format for automatic download over the Internet”, Oxford dictionary “ A digital audio file of speech, music, broadcast material, etc., made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or portable media…” Wikipedia “
A podcast is a program made available in digital format for download over the Internet”

@DarkMatterZine @airadam @bookstodon

Cool, we're in agreement about the downloaded part of the definition. What is implied in the definition is the ability to play that downloaded file offline. (Setting aside for now the idea of playing it offline with an app of your choice.)

But what do you call audio that is trapped on a platform and can only be streamed? Streaming is also downloading, but without saving it for offline use.

Podcast implies downloadable for offline access, right?

@quaid @airadam @bookstodon I think that’s optional, splitting hairs. My podcast is available as both /shrug
@airadam what's sparkling audio?
@Leeps just playing off the theme of "champagne" having to actually come from Champagne, otherwise it's just sparkling wine 🙂
@airadam Ah of course, my apologies. I'll get the brain fired up 😅
@Leeps nothing to apologise for! 🙂
@airadam Sparkling adtech, more like. Tracking your location and goodness knows what else…
@airadam I just discovered podcasts are RSS based (I'm not much of a podcast person) and I was shocked! How did something that got a boost in popularity and investment in the last 5 years not get walled gardened by every major player!? It's wonderful
@airadam and I'm curious now, if podcasts work like this, why can't videos? Right now YouTube is the undisputed front-runner with vimeo, nebula, peertube while still useful, aren't really able to compete. I'm curious if there is any reason video couldn't be more like podcasts
@cubeofcheese I'm sure there used to be video podcasts, but I've not seen one in a long while - which is funny, given how much video is on the internet now!
