This AP story demonstrates how eager some political reporters are to say Trump’s crimes don’t matter. It says the electorate is divided. It says “about half” approve of the indictments. It quotes three of the people polled: all Republicans.

In fact, only a dwindling minority are still able to defend Trump. If you skip the prose and look at the ACTUAL POLL RESULTS, you learn that only 15% of those polled said Trump did “nothing wrong” in Georgia and 21% at the Capital.

Donald Trump's actions has divided Americans along party lines, AP-NORC poll says

A new poll shows Americans are deeply divided along party lines in their views of President Donald Trump’s actions in the most recent criminal charges brought against him. The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that about half of Americans say Trump's alleged attempt to interfere in Georgia’s 2020 vote count was illegal. The poll, which was conducted before Monday’s charges in the Georgia case, also shows that about half of Americans approve of the Justice Department indicting Trump over his efforts to remain in office after losing the 2020 election.

@JamesGleick Of course the crimes matter! Without drama, how can news outlets sell articles or papers! 😂

In all seriousness, though, how anybody can vote for this guy AGAIN is beyond me.

@JamesGleick The unwritten truth is that what the American voter thinks is largely irrelevant. The law operates outside of popular opinion. Trump will likely be convicted, prevented from running for office and possible sent to jail. There's no poll that can save him from that.
@nc26 Conviction is not a barrier to office. For the presidency.
@laprice You're right, I misunderstood prior reports on his legal issues. However, if these go to trial and he's convicted, doesn't he just go to jail? How could he win the Presidency while in jail? It's a mess.
@nc26 yeah. It's a mess. I hope he gets primaried by Chris Christie and denied the ballot in enough states to sideline him.

@JamesGleick

Man, AP has really let itself go of late.

@JamesGleick
The trouble with journalism is the addition of opinion, as in this case, the reporter's interpretation.
@JamesGleick Maybe they should stop putting sports reporters on political beats or, I don’t know, there was an editor-person in the Superman comics, someone who directed the paper’s reporters and made sure that at least most of the words they turned in were spelled correctly. Is that a real thing or are editors a comic book thing like heat vision and flying?
@JamesGleick The headline should read "Americans are divided along party lines over embracing or rejecting narcissistic, despotic fascism"
@JamesGleick I complained to AP. Thanks for noting.
@JamesGleick
Turns out, Republicans were the 'Soft on crime' party all along.
@JamesGleick A comment I made elsewhere maybe bears repeating: This would be a very different world if journalists took their profession as seriously as they expect us to.
@JamesGleick yes, the context is that in Alaska, the number of people who register NOT as R or D is greater than R+D (and has been for a long time)
@JamesGleick Qpublicans and much of the media never let facts get in the way of their narrative.

Olbermann ran the numbers on his podcast today.
@JamesGleick Eager to say, based on their prized innumeracy. God spare me from the “I’m not a math person”
