Multiplayer on PC back in the days:
- Null modem direct connection.
- Modem
- LAN (IP or IPX)
- On the interwebz.
- Personal server, look, you can download the server software there!
- Shared install, so you can do LAN games with your friends for free.

Now:
- LAN? Na mate, internet only, and you have to use our own servers, btw they will shutdown next year for the next release. Don't forget to have a fiber optic connection or you will lag.

@Enalys the server software is also free so you can host even if you dont own the game
@susul Nowaday most companies don't give you access to it.

@Enalys Quake taught me networking and basically everything after happened because of that stepping stone.

That's honestly weird to think about.

@Enalys #GamesAsAService is fraud, yup.

Fuck all #GaaS vendors.

@Enalys bring back piracy and savefile cheat editors too.

I have factorio. Which is a marvelous game. But it's lagging on LAN... :-(

There are still good LAN server games les ke Vrising. But people want more social features where they can compare their stats to the others. And this needs a controlled server environment.

They also want to start and play. Not looking on which server to play in a list, all half empty.

@tuxicoman For the last part, the game should be able to pick a server by itself depending on sereval criterias without depending on an external server.
