Sharing our thoughts on last week’s #OntarioAuditorGeneral report on the #OntarioGreenbelt (thread: 🧵 0/9) #OnPoli #Ontario
As an organization, we focus on increasing supply as the primary solution to the #HousingCrisis. However, the #Housing crisis does not and will never justify corruption. (1/9)

As we said when it first came out, the #Greenbelt plan does not meaningfully contribute to solving the #HousingCrisis: https://www.moreneighbours.ca/news/press-releases/press-release-will-we-ever-stop-paving-paradise-to-put-up-a-parking-lot-1. The government's own #HousingAffordabilityTaskForce came to the same conclusion in their Feb. 2022 report. (2/9)

Instead, the government has needlessly set the #YIMBY movement back by reinforcing harmful narratives about dishonesty in the housing space. WE DO NOT CONDONE the actions of the politicians, staffers, or developers involved. (3/9)

Broad changes to land use should happen in consultation with subject matter experts, and through a transparent process where the public is kept informed. Local consultation is also an important part of the process (local control, such as 3rd party appeals, are not).(4/9)

Where possible, the government should also avoid picking winners and losers with land use changes, and whether a decision would benefit those close to the government should NEVER factor into the decision making process. (5/9)

Along with many voices from across the spectrum, we're calling on the #Ontario provincial government to implement ALL of the recommendations from the #OntarioAuditorGeneral report, including Recommendation 14: Re-evaluation of 2022 Decision to Change the Greenbelt Boundaries. (6/9)

We’re also calling on the #Ontario Government to enact reforms to build more housing in places where there’s existing infrastructure and where people already want to live: in existing neighbourhoods. The #HousingAffordabilityTaskForce’s recommendations should be enacted now. (7/9)

The #OntarioAuditorGeneral's full report is available at https://auditor.on.ca/en/content/specialreports/specialreports/Greenbelt_en.pdf. It contains way more information than we can get into on Mastodon, and is worth at least skimming. (8/9)
