A pretty damning assessment of the Commodore 16 and Plus/4’s prospects from @llamasoft_ox in the August 1984 edition of Personal Computer Games.
@arrgh @llamasoft_ox never even heard of the 16, was that between the Vic 20 and the 64?
@nickhayday @llamasoft_ox Yeah, kind of. It was all a bit misguided really. The 16 came out after the 64 and was designed to fill the place of the discontinued VIC-20 and compete with low-end, low-cost micros - but by then the 64 was considered to be pretty much entry-level, making the 16 look very uninspiring.
@arrgh @nickhayday Yeah it was kind of a disappointment. More colours than the C64 - which was great, I loved colourful machines like the 8-bit Atari - but no sprites, no hardware scrolling, no SID chip. It was originally intended to be a super cheap machine to compete with the likes of the ZX81 and had it appeared in that role it might have done well, but by the time it came out it wasn't much less than just buying a C64 which was better apart from the palette and had tons of games out.
@arrgh @nickhayday That said, that's a cracking port of Stunt Car Racer that someone's done for the plus4!
