Amazon has more than half of all Arm server CPUs in the world

They kept that quiet

The Register
@shefys Aw man, I remember back to when someone from Arm told us that we might have the largest Arm cluster in the world in #CloudLab with 315 machines. That was only about eight years ago, how things have changed.
@ricci AWS announced first gen Arm instance A1 back on 2018. You were way ahead! What kind of machines did you use back then? Not very easy to get such hardware (not counting raspberry Pi)
@shefys Ours (we still have them) are XGene-1 8 core CPUs, housed in HP's Moonshot enclosures, 45 of them in a 4 ⅓ chassis
@ricci wow, that’s pretty amazing! Is it A57 core?

@shefys Yep, A57. Much of the early work on the ARM KVM was done on these nodes by a group at Columbia.

We have a bunch more chassis full of Intel Xeon-Ds in the same form factor

@shefys I think about a year or so after we got these Scaleway became the first cloud provider offering ARM
