I love the new app Callsheet because it's like a better, faster, streamlined IMDB, and over a couple weeks of using it, it has consistently given me better info on "who was that guy in that thing?" questions (even down to specific cast lists for each individual episode!) while you watch shows and movies. Hearty recommend and worth the small annual fee: https://www.caseyliss.com/2023/8/7/callsheet
Announcing Callsheet

I am extremely excited to announce that Callsheet is now available in the App Store!

@mathowie Or, just use the free website this paid app is scraping its data from: https://www.themoviedb.org/
The Movie Database (TMDB)

The Movie Database (TMDB) is a popular, user editable database for movies and TV shows.

@messick @mathowie Using a public API with total permission from the site is "scraping?" Interesting take.
@pokysharpy @mathowie I was initially going to go with “grifting”.

@messick @mathowie The site explicitly provides an API for doing exactly this, along with a support forum to discuss how to use it.

https://developer.themoviedb.org/docs

This is what open access enables. People can create new experiences and overlays on top of data. Users can choose which to use. Much like, say, paid Mastodon and Birdsite and Reddit apps.

If you don't find value in the streamlined and pleasant mobile UI, don't buy it. But it's not a con or grift or "scraping."

@messick @mathowie I’m not sure you understand why musicbrainz.org, themoviedb.org, thetvdb.com, or the myriad other metadata sites exist, because it’s to make the data maintained by contributors available to everyone - including app developers who offer a better experience through their app. No one is “scraping”, “stealing”, or in any way misusing the data that was contributed exactly for this purpose.
